Fireworks

Different reactions from different dogs no doubt, is there anything that can help dogs so it is less stressful? What do owners do if their dogs bark at the fizzy ones they hear? Our collie absolutely hates any bangs or fireworks like a lot more out there but we have found that the best way is to let him find a place where he feels safe, and if he comes to us just reassure him with a stroke, and that seems to work for him , what do others do? just a general thread, with this time of year coming up, which may help dog owners that maybe have not had their dog experience these disturbances

Re: Fireworks

Thankfully my two are fine with them, they pay no attention to them whatsoever
We never made a big deal out of it when they were pups, just ignored the fireworks and dogs

A dog we bred who came back to us was terrified of them and thunderstorms,he would literally hide either under our bed or if the wardrobe was open in there,he would shake from head to foot, panting the works,he really did get streesed out
We used to get him sedatives from the vet.

Re: Fireworks

We had a firework display around our way last month and my 5 month pup was absoloutely fine. At first she looked up to see what the noise was but we didnt make a fuss (or I didnt as my boyfriend slept through it) then she went back to sleep. I am hoping that she will be fine when there will be several displays around at the same time

Re: Fireworks

Oats are supposed to be good to give around firework time.

We put our sound CD on for the lead up to nov as we have one girl who goes nuts

None of our others are bothered by them and will sit looking out the window if the curtains are open......

We shut the curtains and turn the TV up,that is for my benefit though i hate them

Re: Fireworks

My 2 are pretty bomb proof - had no probs with Zipper last year, even took him out walking in the evening as usual.
It is Lilly's 1st firework season so we'll have to wait and see - but I don't think we'll have any issues (touch wood)

Re: Fireworks

All my dogs are scared to death of fireworks and thunder, my little old man cant hear them anymore but he used to pant and literally be stuck to my leg all the time they were going on. Buddy my GSD who I sadly lost this week used to hide under the bed, try to get into the smallest space he could or sit on my lap! My other guy worries but isnt too bad.

As we all know the fireworks dont just happen on 5th Nov it carries on before and after and if I was ever out somewhere and the dogs were alone I would have to rush home else my house would be wrecked.

One time they took out the baby gate on the stairs went into my sons bedroom and literally moved the bed across the room and ripped the back off the base and another time ripped the door frame off the kitchen door! I did after a couple of years end up going to the vets to get sedatives because it was less stressful for them. I dont think fireworks should be sold to the public, only organized displays on 5th Nov should be allowed, this would save our poor dogs from suffering too much and there wouldnt be so many humans hurt either!!

Re: Fireworks

We are quite lucky in the area we live there are only a couple of families that do there own as there is a free big night organised by local council although for the residents of that estate nearby with pets it must be hell

Re: Fireworks

All of the dogs we have owned have been fine with the noise of fireworks.
We have yet to see how Daisie is as she is only 6 months My friend has a little Lakeland Terrier who is so terrified he bounces off the walls and the vet has started him on sedatives already. This year they have bought a D.A.P. plug in. They would do any thing to help him because he is so scared. Poor little thing.

Re: Fireworks

When we first had Amber, the first firework is heard did frighten her, so we told her to send it off, so she barked at it and then we turned it into a game so when ever we have a storm or fireworks go off, she thinks it play time and all the toys come out. If we are out she takes no notice of them at all.
