I dont quite agree about the exercise by the way, I cant say about Lurchers but we had a Whippet for 16 years and in my experience, although they enjoy a good run they are sprinters and dont really have a lot of 'staying power'

Iv never owned a whippet to be honest but i no a few people who race them and they have a striked training programme. But i suppose if its a family pet you are right but they dont look the best if they carry alot of weight

Well yes I suppose a racing Whippet would have to do a lot of training.
And Tilly was always ready for a good walk and romp, about but she was not 'hyper' in any way, she was never bothered if she didn't go out walking every day, that was what I was trying to say. Some breeds get very 'wired' if they don't get thier excersise, she was never like that, oh and had no fat on her either, by the way,

this will make you all want to puke Im doing an amimal managment course and today we were discussing belgium blues some of the class didnt know what they were so in the break I googled it to get a picture in doing so I discovered that gurnseys are impregnanted with feotuses to optimise production but delivery requires a c section eek: but I also discovered one experiment where a whippet was fed up on an exersise regim that gave it the double muscle feature of the belgium eek: and another documenting the starvation of a feral dog in the name of art!!! mad:mad: really wished I had just gone for a coffee

Re: Perfect dog for a young family.

would recommend a mally type (malamute) they are fab with young children, not a violent bone in their body but they do need a different upbringing to other dogs, as well as needing ALOT of exercise....However i would suggest gettin a retriever type or labrador. cant go wrong just make sure you get your pup socialised from as early as possible

my boyfriend has 2 black labs, the one can be temperemental and doesnt like small children, they frighten her, but she wasnt socialised as a puppy at all. so you can't really blame her

good luck on your search

Re: Perfect dog for a young family.

I'd suggest a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. They're absolutely fantastic with children (they aren't known as the nanny dog for nothing!), they don't need a lot of exercise, love being cuddled. Don't be put off by the bad reputation they have, they are in fact big softies.
