I have my lovely dog kitty for 2 years now i got her from a rescue centre. she a gorgeous girl and i have always wondered along with my friends and family what breeds were in her and we enjoyed guessing!

Re: Breed DNA test

There was an article awhile ago in Dogs Today Magazine where the staff sent off DNA of their own dogs some pedigree and some a mix. From what I can remember the tests were far from conclusive even with the pedigrees, in fact if I remember rightly it came back rather absurd, and I think they did one or more again and it was different again. So unless there has been vast improvements dont know how accurate it would be. Cant remember what company that was though.

There is a company that advertises in the Dog Mags (As I said cant remember if this is the one featured) but if you want a look.
Black Dog - Identification, Behavioural Analysis and Training for Dogs apparently they do the DNA test and then their Behaviourist will provide you with a unique and personalised behaviour profile
This information will apparently help you understand your dogs needs better, and make both your lifes happier Quote from their Ad.

Re: Breed DNA test

The technology doesn't seem to be quite there yet.

The company will have a database of individual DNA markers that they claim are exclusive to individual breeds. They search your dog's DNA for these markers in order to identify the breeds in your dog.

The reliability does appear to be very questionable and that seems to be why they wont offer tests confirming the pedigree of a pedigree dog - it just isn't reliable enough and would leave them open to legal action.

OK as a bit of fun, but don't take it too seriously

Re: Breed DNA test

One of my friends had a test done on her dog but hers is obviously part Staffi and they didn't have staffi in the database so she got some very odd results back.

A nice idea but I think they need to widen their database a good bit before it's really worth doing.

Must admit I agree with you guys especially after the article, I understand how health DNA tests work, because they are looking for a particular gene thats previously been identified, and the DNA tests to prove actual parentage as in mother and father, the genetic finger prints there to compere and you are looking for a specific match.
But as to trying to match to a random data base of just breeds?

Re: Breed DNA test

My mum paid for me to get bella done as we were a bit suspisious as to whether she really was what we were told and it came back that she was just siberian husky! No chance! lol It was actually the husky part we questioned in the first place! lol. So, yeah, a bit of fun but wouldn't say they are reliable

Re: Breed DNA test

Thanks everyone for their comments....

I have taken a look at that black dog website and it seems they have their test from other company – what breed is my dog. the test seems really interesting and i would like to do it more out of curiosity and for a bit of fun too, but it seems it can help you understanding your dog’s behaviour as well

The ones that had their dogs tested, which company did you use?
