Question Help needed finding strong yet small dog collar!

Hello all,

I have a Patterdale Terrier - and true to her breed, she is more than a handful!

I am trying to find a dog collar which is small enough to fit her neck, but strong enough to put up with the patterdale crawl.

I have been buying collars from retailers like Pets at Home, but they are lasting no more than 6 months before literally falling apart at the seems.

Her neck size is slightly larger than a Jack Russell, and just to make things awkward, she seems to be a size in between. I really must measure her neck!

Does anyone know where I can buy a good quality - yet small/thin - collar in the UK?

I have tried her on harnesses but she has developed the ability to escape these - long story!

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

You can get extremely strong custom made collars here: Home - HARRIS AND WATSON DOG COLLARS
I have a couple of sets.

I highly recommend P'etiquitte. They're a bit pricey, but they do always have some on sale and they're exceptional quality - both the leather and the workmanship. And you can get plain ones if you don't like the bling! They do right down to really tiny sizes. There's a few of us on here with P'etiquitte collars.

Try your nearest Saddler - I get all my collars and leads made there for a fraction of the price of other stuff and the oldest lead I have is 32 years old and still going strong!

Are the P'etiquette small collars a softish leather? Poppy has been having the plastic clip type with the slide adjuster and with her two latest ones the adjuster keeps slipping when she pulls so I'm worried she might slip out of it if I've not checked it.

Today I bought a new one from P@H, a nylon one, and tested the slide adjuster, it seems pretty good so I'm hoping I'll have a bit more luck. It was only £2.49 but if this one goes the same way as the others I may try a buckle type. She's used to a softish collar, and only wears it on walks, so just wondering what these are like.

I also need a 3/8"/10mm one (half inch at a push) as she has a tag like this and that width collar is not easy to find.

Lupine 1/2" small dog / puppy collar - Collarways – dog and cat collars, leads and harnesses, toys, bowls, dog health and grooming products

I use the above collars for my Jack Russell i bought her one as a puppy and she still wears it now they also have a great guarantee that it shouldn't brake but if it does you can get another one free the same applies for leads. But in the past 2yrs i haven't needed to as they are so hard wearing.

They're quite firm leather on the outside but the inside is lined with (I think) pig skin so very soft against the dog. Kenzie has no issues with it. The little ones do come at half an inch, but the guy hand makes them so may be able to make it thinner possibly.

Re: Help needed finding strong yet small dog collar!

Thank you both, I've added those sites to my favourites for next time I need to buy Poppy a collar.

Funnily enough, the site that sells the tags also sells collars, but they don't have one for the 10mm tag, only for the 15mm and bigger. Perhaps I should contact them and see if they can assist those of us who bought the smaller tag!

Re: Help needed finding strong yet small dog collar!

I will send you the small Rogz collar (for free) if you would like it that is on this thread here: Dogmatic, Kongs, Book for sale; hardly used.

It is pretty strong and Kilo only wore it for about 2-3 weeks before he totally outgrew it .

If you want it; just PM me your address and i'll pop it in the post.
