Re: Claws...
Im surprised that your dog has a claw problem as we have never had to get our dogs claws done. Does this differ from breed to breed. We found that we did road walking on concrete to wear his claws naturally and then his normal free run at the field. Must be quite lucky not to have to worry about his claws.

Re: Claws...
Meg rarely walks on concrete. We live right opposite a huge field, the only thing in between is a gravel road, which is used by the row of houses we live on, 9 all together.
So she comes out of the house, waits at the bottom of the path until I say it's OK, then darts off onto the field - waiting for me to throw a tennis ball. Concrete really does keep them down - but she is so energetic, that a lead walk just wouldn't do. And having the field right outside our house, we just take her there. I think a few lead walks might be in order though, maybe after her stint with the tennis ball. Poor girl, can't go through with loosing another claw. |

Re: Claws...
Its hard as a free run is better for her and getting rid of built up energy. I alternate a bit but as you said if you have no paths to help wear down her claws may be worth finding a groomer or vet nurse to trim them for you. My friends grey hound had very long claws even though he use to be out on paths to. I always wanted to get out the nail varnish as he had perfect sandy coloured nails. {great for painting,} never did it but was tempted my mate would have killed me. Her dog was that daft he probably wouldnt have cared any way.

Re: Claws...
I do them myself - I used to be a dog groomer, it can be a bit tedious, and she doesn't like it being done at all. They just grow so quick, and then she ends up having an accident like this.
I will just have to keep on top of them, and do some more lead walking me thinks. |

I have 2 5 month old sows though and they are fine. I also trim Ozzy's, my bearded dragon. And as you can imagine, he is cool as a cucumber, doesn't even bat an eye lid. |

Re: Claws...
Don't let the pigs win lol!!! I have 19 of them and once a month I have a fight with them and they get their nails clipped. I usually tip them upside down and wedge them betweeen my arm and side. Fidgety bums isnt the start of it!
I wouldnt bother with salt or mineral licks either if they are getting Dry Guinea Pig food and plenty of fresh veg they dont need them. Regarding the nails, why dont you try a electronic nail file? The groomer that taught me uses them and they seem to work fab!

I haven't heard of the electronic ones before? I can imagine though it wouldn't go down too well with Meg, noise wise - the popping noise from bubble wrap sends her running. She acts tough - but really see is afraid of her own shadow. |
