Re: new cross?

What is the big deal witht he health test stuff, really?

For those that do health test their dogs before breeding then those genes will outlast the ones that aren't and develop disorders as that is how nature works - the strongest will survive.

Any dogs that aren't health tested and don't develop health issues then they will be fine too, so everything will come round full circle in the end anyway. If you want to have a healthy dog only buy one that comes with these documents or else run the risk of having a duff pup. That's where awareness comes in but you'll never eradicate it completely and it's becoming such a boring subject now.

I never health tested my rabbits when I bred them as a kid does that make me bad? Do you think that every single Bovine? Equine? Bird? Rodent? Fish? Or any other mammal? Not in the wild they don't so what's the difference here? Conscience thought that's all. Just love the dog you have regardless.

Here's two questions I am going to throw out there and feel free to answer them as honestly as you like - Were your parents health tested before they bred? I know mine weren't, neither were theirs and theirs before that etc. Neither were any of my friend's or work colleagues that I am aware of. Should we have to be health tested before engaging in sexual activity?

Re: new cross?

What about hereditary health issues though that manifest through gene carriers, which is essentially what the health tests in dogs are looking for, that get passed down through generation to generation?

I just think it's about time everyone stopped banging on people for having certain dogs and no paperwork for them.

There are a lot of tests done on Hereditary health issues in humans. If done properly and breeders know their dogs backgrounds a lot of issues should/ could be eradicated.
I totally agree re the banging on etc... but it does make me personally mad when I see a thread about people with no papers or testing done etc wanting to breedor threads/posts slating Pedigrees. It does work both ways!!!

That's not how it works. Two apparently healthy dogs could both be carriers for a known genetic condition, breed them together and you get affected pups. Depending on the condition in question the pups could die as a result when it could easily have been avoided by testing before breeding.

So let me ask you this and feel free to give an honest answer; knowing the above why would you not do the tests?
