Dogs Attacking Dogs in Public Places (Highway)

I have spoken with West Yorkshire Police regarding the incident on Wednesday 24 September.

I was told
Nothing they can do.

1. Mixed breeds are not deemed as a dangerous dog.
My response - I said you are wrong, there are four breeds that are banned.
Any dog is deemed as dangerous if it is out of control and poses a threat to the general public.

2. Its their nature to fight (to be expected).
My response - So an owner is not responsible for his dogs actions

3. Yes
My response - but it can't be enforced.

I should have the right to walk along any Street with my dog without him being attack - So what you are saying is I am no longer able to walk on that Street with my dog.

4. Were the dogs a threat to me.
My response - no but their actions caused distress to my mother who is an elderly lady and she was very shook up. These dogs could kill someone's pet.

The Police person understood what I was saying but they have limited powers.

I have got the number for the dog warden, I also need and name and address of the dog owner (a database system is needed) I will get it before the end of the weekend.

The law is an ass. There are laws in place but not enforceable, unless of course your dog is a particular breed or breed type. That's the message I received loud and clear this morning.

Now I am mad. I'd love to use this as a test case and start a precedent.

Sue

It makes you sick doesn't it!!!

Now had someone reported you or I because of our dogs it would have been a totally different response because of their breed mad:

This is why we need a change in the law to make owners, regardless of the breed, responsible for their dogs actions with fines and sentences to match.

In other words they cant be arsed.. so yet again it's the people who bring up their dogs properly who are the ones that suffer.

Sorry to hear this, you should make an official complaint against the police

Re: Dogs Attacking Dogs in Public Places (Highway)

my friends dog is a border collie x gsd
soft as anything

got attacked by some sort of cross breed dog - her mum didn't even know what they heck it was.

All susie was doing was being herself - being friendly - dog went for her, her leg and hip are sore and she has to be careful what she does!

Sue I totally agree with your comments.

Do the police really need to wait until a dog attacks a person, which can easily happen if an owner steps in to try and diffuse the situation!

Again it comes back to my previous threads on this subject, since I strongly believe that in order to avert situations like this, ALL dogs should be kept on leads in public places.

Sounds like your poor mum was pretty shaken up. If your mum felt any form of threat from these dogs (and frankly I think many people do when strange dogs who show aggression approach!) then the police can take it. It all boils down on whther you had reasonable grounds to fear the dogs would hurt you (or your mum)

What a joke, so a mongrel can do as it pleases but anything that resembles a pit can be taken for no reason. This country makes me sick!
