Re: Feeding dogs only six days a week?

When I first heard about it, I was horrified but the more I learn the more convinced I am that I would be good for us all in our prime - not so much a totally fasting day but at least a detox day.

BTW if I did it for my doggie (once she is a year old) then I would also not eat on that day - or at least not eat dinner

Re: Feeding dogs only six days a week?

I've heard about it too. However, it's not something I'd recommend, either for dogs or humans. If the body does not get enough calories to function, it starts to eat its own reserves. Unless the animal or human is overweight, this won't be fat - it will be from muscle tissue. In addition, stomach acid is still produced - and if there is nothing to digest in the stomach, the acid will start to break down the stomach wall itself. Not something I'd want to inflict on any of my animals.

Re: Feeding dogs only six days a week?

Cocker Spaniel always wants to eat and it is impossible to pass one day a week. But i feed him a small portion every day. He's never been overweight. But when he has diarrhea I don't give him any food in 24 hours but water.

Re: Feeding dogs only six days a week?

I would never do it, think about when we get hungry and our tummies rumble and we start to feel sick and weak and get headaches coz our bodies dont have enough calories or nutrients or energy to function properly,

Would u really like to inflict that on ur dog??

Re: Feeding dogs only six days a week?

Raises hand tentatively - and runs for cover!! I did try it for a while but IMHO I didnt notice any benefits, nor, I hasten to add, did I notice it have a detrimental effect on my boys.

Tinamary - it's not utter buncum - it's a personal choice, clearly you know nothing about RAW feeding so until you've researched it perhaps just a 'no I dont do it' would have sufficed

Re: Feeding dogs only six days a week?

I have heard something similar, like fasting on the first day of every month and i think it is actually a very good idea, and if you speak to the older generation, they do seem to agree with this.

Re: Feeding dogs only six days a week?

My little dog very often chooses to have a fast day, today being one of them. Turned her nose up at her food this morning, she does this quite regularly and I dont worry as she is fine and goes back to normal the next day.
She has meat in the morning with biscuits in the evening. Yesterday she was looking for more after her biscuits so I gave her more. Obviously she isn't hungry this morning. I think that is how it works in the wild, when food is plentiful they would fill up on it then not eat for a day or two. Basicly only eat when they are hungry, which ,lets face it most of our pet dogs never are.
