What Sort of Dog to get??

Hello!

I've been wanting a dog for 14 years and my husband has finally agreed that we could have one - but what sort!!!!

I love German Shepherds, but our house really isn't big enough. My other choice would be a Springer Spaniel. I work 6 hours each day, but have all the school holidays off and have plenty of time to walk the dog after school and before we go in the morning.

I would like a Springer size dog with a short to medium coat - any suggestions please!!!

Thank you. x

Re: What Sort of Dog to get??

We thought about what sort of dog to get for ages and I read lots and talked to lots of people too.

I think that the best advice was to go for a dog that you like the look of - then research its needs - exercise etc and make sure that it would fit in with your lifestyle.

Then make sure that you find a great breeder.

We have just got a Springer x cocker (Sprocker) and she is lovely. Very differnt to the Terriers that we had before.

Hope your search goes well.

Re: What Sort of Dog to get??

If you are not in an immediate rush - How about getting a couple of tickets to Discovery Dogs - (Look it up on the Kennel Club web site) - You get to see loads of different breeds and speak to their owners.

And its a great fun day out

Other than that - as above really speak to as many people as possible who have dogs, don't forget to ask what the downsides of the breed are as well.

I've just got 2 little Hienz57's so can't really help recomend a breed as such.

Re: What Sort of Dog to get??

We have been waiting ages to get a dogs the kids finally go to an age where it was a sensible thing to do. I look into loads of breeds and read so many books we went for a labrador in the end its what I had always wanted but thought maybe it was too big but I am so glad we went with our insincts we love him and he has fitted in perfectly.

Someone else suggested a Sprocker, they seem lovely. Are they actually bread as Sprockers or is that just what you call yours, if you see what I mean?!

Re: What Sort of Dog to get??

I would also ask around. Speak to dog owners and do some research.

I would not recommend GSD's for the first time dog owners anyway. Ask yourselves these questions

1. What size dog do I want
2. What budget do we have
3. How much exercise can we devote to our dog

That should give you a starter.

Best of luck in your search
