Re: What Sort of Dog to get??

If you have a look at my website- Sgurr - English Springer Spaniels - Welcome you will find the health check info for Springers. Serious cocker breeders are health checking too. especially for Progressive Retinal Atrophy and Glaucoma (via gonioscopy). In the past you could get Springers and Cockers from the same litter, it was a size difference but the breeding lines have diverged now. Not much to choose between good Springers, Cockers and Sprockers in terms of temperament but if you are looking at these dogs you need to be very aware that they are favourites for puppy farming and back yard breeders. The only one to avoid (unless you want a working dog for shooting) is a Wocker. A Wocker is a pedigree working Cocker, brilliant dogs in the right hands but not (in my view) suitable for a pet home.

I can recommend a GOLDEN RETRIEVER

They are fantastic family dogs - don't mind kids, cats, easy to train and beautiful looking.

If I were you I would Google Sprockers, I just have and have to say its not all good. They seem to be very hyper and hard to control by all accounts, even for people who are used to Springers and Cockers, to be honest I cant understand why these two breeds have been mixedconfused:

GET A LABRADOODLE!

Just so I'm not the only victim of designer dog abuse on here. (That's a joke btw guys!).

No, in all seriousness. They're gorgeous dogs, good with cats and children and aren't too needy and can be easily trained and are very vey very cute.

They are friendly, and easy to train, but remember they are sporting dogs, so as well as needing exercise, they will also need mental stimulation, and lots of it.

So ask yourself if you'd be happy getting involved in field work etc. You won't be able to enter one in competitions, but you can still enjoy this activity with them.

Do your breeder research thoroughly as some can be hyper, depends on the temperament of the dam and sire.

Re: What Sort of Dog to get??

If you like spaniels why not get a cavalier king charles spaniel as they are great family dogs and are fast learners with training ect
