Best dog food...

Hey all,

As you know next week we will be bringing our pups home. We've decided on feed them James Wellbeloved. The breeder has them on Beta Purina, they've been weaned off solid food and are just on biscuits now, is this purina good for them? And how to wean them off it and onto James Wellbeloved once their home? Any ideas?

Thanks

Re: Best dog food...

I changed my dog food recently and put them on James Wellbeloved... no problems at all.

I think the recommended advice is to gradually swap it over about a week, starting off with 6 parts of the old food to one part of the new food and gradually increasing the new and decreasing the old...

Re: Best dog food...

I swapped Dillon from Wellbeloved as he didn't really like it. He then went to something, i can't remember what. He is now happily munching on Eukanuba Agility & Jogging and he is a totally different dog.

He doesn't go up the walls at home anymore and doesn't bark for no reason but when you get him out and about and he opens the afterburners he can run and run and run and run and then when you think he's had enough he can run a little bit more. Get him home, he eats a bit, sleeps, gets up, has a sniff around and the like and then just relaxes. His attention when training is fantastic and he is really an absolute joy to be around.

I know diet plays a big part in how things behave but the change in him is amazing and for the best.

Re: Best dog food...

I was told Eukanuba, is made by the same people who make Iams, who test their food on animals in the most terrible way, plus apparantley its full of additives and stuff, but I dunno I'm just going on what I've been told. We were going to go with James Wellbeloved, until we find out now Mars have taken it over, and their testing on animals, and selling it in stores. So we're now thinking of either Burns or Royal Canin, something that will give them a good start in live, and keep them healthy, we found out too late about the dog food we were feeding Sally, so this time we're doing things differently.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Re: Best dog food...

I feed Burns - Mini Bites. And have had no probs.
Burns also does a wet canned food now as well which I sometimes give a little in a kong or mixed with the dry as a treat.

Re: Best dog food...

My dog Jinnie is on Burns Pork & Potato, as she has allergies...nightmare, she is allergic to wheat, rice, and lamb. Wheat & rice's pretty much in ALL dog foods, treats, everything!!! which is awful as we own a pet shop, and it's like having children and owning a toy shop and a Sweet shop, and she isn't allowed anything, all we can give her really is raw hide chews...as yet to find a treat that she can actually have, tried the dried carrots and things like that...gave her the squits!

Anyway dog foods...

I think Burns is a good brand, isn't bulked up with rubbish like some commercial dog foods, Jinnie does well on it, and actually enjoys it.

I would stay away from foods that have kibble pieces with different bright colours etc, they are that colour to entice you as the owner, not the dog, full of additives and crap basically!

Yes you are right about Eukanuba/Iams there was a terible report on the testing done on animals by this company, mad: I have never used it.
Royal Canin and Burns are very good quality for those who want to feed dry food.

Re: Best dog food...

Best dry food in my opinion is Orijen: 70% meat, 30% fruit & veg, NO grains/cereals or artificial additives.

I feed RAW to my dogs and cats.
