Started crate training...need help

Hi All,

I have today and yesterday starting crate training Month the 8 month pup.

I have put him in his pen and closed the door. I am trying to do 20 minutes throughout the day so he can get used to it.

He is going crazy there at the moment. Also, i've just heard his bowl probably being knocked over.

Am i right to ignore his whinning and barking and just when he is quiet after the 20 mins take him out?

Thanks,
Darren

If this is his first experience at 8 months old, he may find it very confusing and it might help to make sure he has lots of lovely distractions to keep him busy. Have you got a kong or something he especially likes to chew that you can give him whilst he's in there? Keep it short and sweet and build up over time.

Hey Janice,

Where actually using one of these at the moment:

NOZtoNOZ Sof Pen n2 Pet Gates & Pens UK

and they don't really have a door. Would you recommend leaving this in the same room as i am in in the the day and leaving one of the sides open so he can wonder in and out? Or is a metal cage a must buy?

Hi Darren,

Have you introduced the crate in the right way?

Not sure if I've sent you this link already, but you might find it useful.

And yes, you should not go to him until he has been quiet for a few minutes, no whining, barking, pawing etc.

Obviously we are trying to get him to spend time on his own because i need to go back to work in 3-4 weeks and he's going to be on his own in the day.

Right, i've set this up in my front room now, where we spend most days/evenings. i've put his bed there and will feed him there at meal times. i've took all the newspaper up that we had on the floor and now only his walkway to his den and puppy pad are on the floor.

Now... the challenge begins again

Atleast this way he can go in and out if he wants to.

Any other tips?
