Darren is on a distinguished road
Advice/Progress

Hi All,

We got our Bichon Frise yesterday and he has been extremely well behaved.

He come home and then made himself comfy straight away. He slept in a self made cardboard crate last night in our room and we had no nonsense at all.

When we took him out of the crate and then into the living room (currently with newspapers on the floor) he went straight for a pee. We then gave him breakfast and he had a poo/pee straight after.

Me and my OH just had breakfast so we put him in the crate, and put some music on, he's lying on his pillow and again not even a bark or whine!

He seems fine, and the strangest thing is that he loves classical music?? Seems to calm him right down. He's only 8 weeks and the vet has said for us to not let him outside. He's having his first jab Thursday so its going to be puppy pads for him and then when we can take him out we can train accordingly.

What do everyone think of his behaviour? Normal? Above normal? Or is he still scared? He seems fine and we are just very suprised how well he has taken to us.

The only thing is that he wants to bit the carpet and couch. However, we are cutting this out straight away.

Look forward to your replies.

Darren

Re: Advice/Progress

Hi Darren, congratulations on your new puppy he sounds wonderful, very well behaved I would make the most of it while it lasts you may find as he settles in and gets used to you he may get a bit 'naughtier'
When your vet says he shouldn't go out he means for walks etc. if you have a garden it will quite alright for you to take him out to do his toilet, in fact the sooner you start the better. I would just put paper down for night time or when he has to be left alone, but take him out to where you want him to preform as soon as he wakes and after every feed, he will soon be asking to go by himself.
Good luck.
Mary

Re: Advice/Progress

Sounds like what you are going through is what my dog trainer calls the "honeymoon period" A lot of puppies go through this, it's there way of lulling their new owners into a false sence of security before bedlam decends

In all seriousness, it sounds like you have a wonderful puppy there that is obviously very comfortable being part of your family

On the training front I completely agree with marlynaveve. The garden will be fine for your new baby. I'm a strong believer that paper training just enforces to the puppy that it is in fact OK to go to the toilet indoors. Neither of my pups have been paper trained and were cleaner much earlier than people I know who paper trained their pups.

Take pup into the garden after every meal time, everytime they wake up, after a few minutes of play time and at regular intervals during the day. Use a key word or phrase when they perform, eg "toilet", "be quick", "wee wee's" and plenty of praise when they do their business, he will very quickly learn that outside is where he's supposed to go.

Good luck, and have fun & plenty of paitience
