Pedigrees, what's the point??!!

I had an interesting conversation with the mother in law today. It started re bulldogs, and the reason for their short legs, muscular bodies and over shot jawline (hanging on and swinging from the bulls nose in the bullring) and it got us to wondering about the point of other breeds. Some working dogs etc are obvious but we couldn't think what the point would be of the bulging eyes of a pug or a cavalier, the shortened nose in similar breeds or the spots on a dalmation! We've been racking our brains on that one and the closest we can come up with is camoflage for a coalfield in the snow!? Can anyone offer an explaination or is it all just pointless vanity? Do breeders really feel it worth the awful health implications to produce such strange, pointless and deformed looking animals...(speaking from a healthy crossbreed owners perspective).

I think the dalmations spots are so they looked good next to/under the carriage, but I could be wrong!
I suppose those dogs bred as companions were bred partly for looks.

Re: Pedigrees, what's the point??!!

To be honest hun, if u research the breeds they have changed a lot over the years mainly for a asthetic look.
A good few years ago all breeds had a purpose hence the way they looked then but now breeders have changed the way all breeds look. So u get the bulging eyes of pugs and bulldogs with the funny looking faces.
Because certin breeders are very old fashioned in the way hey think u would never be able to tell them that the look of the breed is actually causing health problems i.e bulldogs pugs, gsd etc BUT some breeders have realised that they need to help the breeds that they love so change is happening slowly but it is happening x

Re: Pedigrees, what's the point??!!

Can I also add that crossbreeds are not always healthier as they can get all the problems from both breeds which is horrific and is more of a money scheme than anything else x

The point is really so you know what you're getting!

Not all of them are ugly/deformed whatever u call them.

I'm a crossbreed owner myself and I can see the point of pedigree. But I also agree with you that some breeds are getting ridiculous purely because of cosmetic demands...

Re: Pedigrees, what's the point??!!

I'm not saying all crossbreeds are healthy, but mine is. Just thought would explain my personal position. Personally I can think of plenty of deformed looking dogs. The ones I've already mentioned, plus daschunds, anything hairless, bassetts, anything really with loose skin folds, overly long spines, drooping eyes,.....Any feature really that causes health problems and distress to the animal with no obvious benefit.
