Indoor & Kennel Dog

Hi, we are planning on buying a puppy (Rat Terrier) and want him to be an indoor dog however during the day would like to build a kennel and run for him while we are at work, etc. We have a temp regulated garage and my thought is to build a kennel in the garage with a pet door to an exterior run. At night we would allow him into the home to be with the family. Suggestions, will this work or be a nightmare?

Re: Indoor & Kennel Dog

hi there...just read your post and i think it sounds like a good idea..the one problem i personaly would worry about is if your dog can run free in the garden and nobody is there, you might leave yourself open to somebody stealing your dog.just a thought

I tried doing that, but when i left tess outside she cried all day long and staffys make a sceaming noise, next door told me so i stayed there to listen and she would not shut up so i had no choice but to let her stay in i only did it cos she ate my house so thats when i crated her, but i was worried someone would steel her as at that point staffys and rottis were get pinched and i had both.

Re: Indoor & Kennel Dog

The only thing I can think of is it might cause problems as reguards to housetraining. I got my Shih Tzu when he was 5 months old, from a kennels, so he has been used to peeing in his own area, so house training is taking longer. I`m just thinking if your puppy needs to have a wee in the evening or bedtime, he might decide to just go on the floor in the house as thats what he`s used to doing in his kennel. But on the good side, he does get the best of both worlds.
