Skippy Jack Russells....

My JR skips along now and then when we're out walking....he's not a tiny jack russell so his legs aren't THAT short, lol, and I've seen loads of Jackies around this area that do the same....walking along perfectly fine then hanging one back leg up so they sort of skip along.

Does anyone actually know why they do it? Is it just a JR thing or do bigger dogs do it too?

Nat x

Re: Skippy Jack Russells....

I'm afraid I really don't know why they do it, but thought I'd just add that while working in kennels I've seen lots of dogs (especially JRT's) do it.
There's a lovely Min Schnauzer who's a regular, he does it too but I can't recall anything much bigger doing it.

Lol, thanks, it's such a strange little walk, maybe it is purely down to the size of their legs and how fast they are going

Re: Skippy Jack Russells....

I have a westie x JR and she does this occasionally. I thought perhaps she had a itchy tummy or pad but not time to stop and scratch

Re: Skippy Jack Russells....

It's often down to a luxating patella, typical symptom and this is not uncommon in small dogs unfortunately

Re: Skippy Jack Russells....

Agree with above post.... 99% of the time (figuratively [sp] speaking) It is due to a luxating patella. JR and the majority of small terrier and toys require these to be screened for before breeding with.

TBH I'd be having it checked at the vets before it develops further

Re: Skippy Jack Russells....

Totally agree it's a Symptom of luxating patella!! A lot of the small breed have it and it's hereditary! If you add fish oil (cod liver or salmon) to ter diet that really helps joint support and glucosamine and chrondrotitn supplements help one of my girls has a loose knee cap (not bad enough to be graded as lp) and my ensuring she stays lean and supplementing her I've managed to stop it!

Re: Skippy Jack Russells....

Thanks for that
I truly think Heidi's is an itchy moment because she doesnt do it often but I will certainly keep an eye on it now that you have pointed it out.
She has joint supplements in her food

Re: Skippy Jack Russells....

Domino did that for about week it was when he held his leg up all the time he was diagnosed with Legge Claves Perthes disease. By the way Domino is a JRT x Toy Poodle.

I would keep an eye on it and if it becomes more frequent take him to the vets.

Good advice. I'd also ensure anyone who suspects this has good insurance in place orthopaedic surgery is expensive and if it comes to this ensure you see a specialist in this area for your dog, ask for a referral

Hope all is well for any "skipping" pups!
