Staffies and bad press!

I think its a real shame that Staffies continually get bad press on forums. Having worked with all kinds of dogs over the years, I can honestly say that on the whole, Staffies make wonderful family pets.

Yes, I do appreciate that some are not particularly dog friendly, but that should not make them pariahs! We live next door to a Staffie who has a wonderful temperament with people, but he detests other dogs and cats. In fact the owner was actually burgled a few weeks back and the dog just slept through!

Let us stop putting certain dogs into pigeon holes - please.

Re: Staffies and bad press!

The media has also stirred up alot of hype surrounding this breed, this happened to us not long after Ellie was killed by an alleged Pitt.
Myself and daughter were on our way down to the off license for some sweets and stuff,
Anyway while on our way there was and elderly couple late 60's early 70's,we got the looks, and a nasty remark,
"fancy letting a young girl like that have full control over one of those Pitbull things"
I said Pardon, for your information, she is not a Pitbull thing, she is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and only a puppy at that. She is infact very well bred.I said With all due respect, you don't know the first thing about me,my children or my dogs, yet you feel informed enough about the breed to pass a remark like that!
I walked off fuming mad:

We also got banned from our local pub because of Tyler,he was a seven month old puppy,we used to sit outside, away from the childrens play area up the far corner out of the way.He used to lie quietly under the table taking everything in his stride, but apparently he was intimidating the customers
I posted this on another thread,
It never fails to amaze me that it is always without fail a SBT that takes the breed bashing.
I get slightly irrtated by this when people make assumptions about the breed as a whole by meeting one irresponsible owner and it's dog.
But it's ok for the other numpties to allow there dogs off to pester me and my dogs, and on 4 seperate occasions were attacked. Now had my dogs retaliated,it would have caused an uproar.
Never once have I bad mouthed breeds,or crossbreeds,at the end of the day it's the owner that's at fault.
By victimising a breed of dog you are not addressing the issue of irresponsble owners, only the sypmtoms.Surely as most of us already know this is not the way forward. We need clear legislation that makes all owners of ALL breeds responsible for their dogs actions and a tough punishment for irresponsible owners.
My bitch is not allowed off lead, she has a long training line.My dog is allowed offlead but only when it's safe and there are no other dogs or owners around.
He is bombproof but no way am I willing to chance giving this wonderful breed and more importantly my dogs a bad reputation.

The majority of SBT owners are responsible owners, but you always will get one that will give the breed a bad reputation.
This breed is not a dangerous one,may I remind you of what is written into the breed standard,
Highly intelligent and affectionate, especially with children.
Out of 200+ breeds registered in the UK this breed along with another are the only ones to have that written into the standard.

Re: Staffies and bad press!

I agree they are so sterio typed and they are such loyal and loving family dogs but to many people listen to such rubbish stories about how dangerouse they are. Any dog of any shape and size could have the protential to harm someone if they wanted to.

Re: Staffies and bad press!

I must admit before I came on here I was always pretty scared of the staffy, possibly because of all the bad press, a couple incidences I have seen down the park (down to the owners fault..) and all the intimidating groups of young lads hanging around with them looking fierce.

Since I have joined the forum though I have heard so many good things about them, and I feel so awful about how many are in rescue. If we ever do get a second dog I think a staff rescue would be on the top of my list, especially as they are meant to be so gentle with children. I think its like any dog, if you put the time in, they will turn out as loyal and loving as any.

Re: Staffies and bad press!

It must be so frustrating having people making assumptions about your dog by an idiot who clearly knows nothing.

I do not know much at all about Staffies but would never ever think a dog is born aggressive because of it being a particular breed

Re: Staffies and bad press!

the thing is the staff is so over bred nowa days that every dick head on a council estate has got one !
Because of their dog fighting background they attract the wrong type of owners witch leads to them ending up in the wrong hands!

Yeah I agree, as I've said before its vital breeders stop selling the pups as "trophy dogs" to young single lads...
