Really? I'd be horrified if our dog attacked another dog because it came running up to a young family member..

Re: Staffies and bad press!

I agree, I think all dogs do have that pack mentality. Maybe its stronger in some breeds than others.

I've always been a great believer in trying to see things from a dogs point of view in trying to understand their behaviour. In the same park I saw a woman getting frustrated because her dog wouldn't come back to her. She was getting increasingly angry and shouting at it. I thought to myself would I want to go back to my owner in that temper!! I suggested to her that she turned her back on the dog and started to walk away and it trotted after her!! Its common sense really.

Oh if it looked like it was posing a threat then yes I think it is pack mentality to guard no matter what the breed

Re: Staffies and bad press!

While walking my dogs with a friend the other day, a staff and owner calmly walking near minding his own business......... my friend got in a right state, panicking calling her dog back to put him on the lead causing a right fuss, as it was gonna "attack", the staff was not even interested, it's trying to change peoples perception of them is the hardest i couldn't believe her reaction though. Being a owner of a dog who has been attacked three times by different dogs, not a staff may i add, i firmly believe as others has said blame the deed not the breed. I think they are a smashing breed as with ALL dogs in the right hands.

Re: Staffies and bad press!

the way i understand becky is that the staff had a friendly sniff first and then went onto the dogs throat?

My gsd would probably tell the dog off by barking but wouldnt attack first.

Also doesnt matter whos fault that was in this situation i believe both dogs should have went on the lead after an experience like this.

Re: Staffies and bad press!

I honestly can not believe some of the posts on here!

As for inteligent comments well It must be breed specific then rolleyes:All staffies are killers, all labs are child bitters, all rotts are baby killers,Pitts don't have a preference they will do both
Oh and those who drive ford cars are more at risk of running kids over so we best ban all those too!

All I can say is I'm glad that those of you with blinkers on don't work in government eek:

Thanks for your agreement with certain aspects of my post, beckybex.my wife might not necessarily agree that I make intelligent comments!Interesting how noone has picked up on your point above, that only positive and desirable traits in a breed are inherited.Maybe that's actually the case or maybe they can't see the hypocrasy(feel free to point out my spelling error)in their own arguement.Or it could be that they're all sharing the same brain cell this evening.....

Erm,Probably
Maybe we see the bigger picture and know that you can't tar a whole breed with same brush through the actions of one individual.
