Thats such a sweet picture and nearly all the staffs ive had contact with have been really big softies. Yes you may get a odd agressive one but its normally down to stupid owners that have no clue as to how to train there dogs.

Re: Staffies and bad press!

Of course there is the school of thought that dogs being pack animals they will always defend their own packs against enemies, they WILL be very sweet with members of the family as if properly trained they will consider themselves as part of that pack and react to anything they felt disturbed by.Would they be so good with a dog/person they considered to be a threat to their owners/pack?

Would your dog ?

Would any dog ?
Again this applies to all breeds,do you work for The Sun by any chance ?

This thread was about staffies and bad press, not if or how they would react if they considered something or someone to be a threat. For the record mine wouldn't do a damn thing,we got broke into last year not one of them even barked!rolleyes:

Re: Staffies and bad press!

The first time I met a staffy, I was a bit unsure but it didn't take long for me to fall in love with him. He was playful and hilarious and rather naughty. All he wanted to do was run, play and be a minx. Honestly, his worst quality was that he did big poos!!! I guess I'm used to little poos with my toy poo.

Re: Staffies and bad press!

I'd like to add that I took kids to the park saturday afternoon, was standing watching them play and saw a young couple with a staffy (off the lead) and a toddler around 18 months old. The staffy was sticking close to the toddler. A little norwich terrier came trotting over, they sniffed at each other and the staffy lunged at the terriers throat. There was a lot of noise, the terriers owner came rushing over but couldn't seperate them. The toddler wasn't hurt but was right next to this and was distressed. The mum couldn't drag her staffy off and ran to the cafe (leaving the child behind) to fetch her husband who'd gone to fetch a cup of tea! He strolled over and dragged them apart. I wasn't close enough to hear what was said but was shocked to see that they didn't even put the staffy back on a lead! I wouldn't call myself an expert but that looked to me like a clear case of a staffy defending a pack member so I'm inclined to agree with bushwacker. You can get personal and call him an idiot, and I'm sure he's no more of an expert than any of us but he's made some intelligent comments. The other dog wasn't hurt and maybe it was a warning attack but it definitely wasn't play and caused a lot of distress all round.

As a seperate but related point, I've noticed on this forum that people who favour certain breeds are very quick to talk up the positive aspects of a particular breeds temperament but when it comes to the negative aspects all of a sudden its only down to the owner, nothing to do with the breed!! Do people really think that only positive aspects of behaviour and conditioning are inherited and not negative??!!

I totally accept that a dogs behaviour is its owners responsibility. My dogs have always been on a lead when out in public places (we're lucky enough to have 6 acres to let them have free run of), as much for their own safety as anything else.

Well, our GSD would probably have a go at another dog if it came running up to a younger member of our family.. Surely all breeds of dogs have that pack mentality?
