Perfect walk ruined again.

Was in the park with my mutt earlier, not for the first time a staffy approached and turned on my dog, bertie. He was just mooching about happily as he does when the little brown Brindle came over looking as if it wanted to play a bit, both had a bit of a sniff and the staff just turned without warning and went straight for his throat, resulting in me having to get between them and put bertie on his lead and get away. The owner of the staff just shrugged,'doesnt always take to other dogs!' and walked off without even an apology! Typical, not the first time and sure it wont be the last, there were kids in the park, other dogs etc and the owner didnt even put the staff back on the lead despite its obviously aggressive nature. If i had my way i would ban this breed from public places or insist that they were registered and muzzled.Same goes for any breed known for aggression and bred for fighting.

Re: Perfect walk ruined again.

true,i have found it fairly typical of the owners of the breed in our area tho,all of a certain type, more interested in the kudos of having a dog for the image it gives than for the satisfaction of pet ownership. The excuse always being 'Oh,he's a great family dog' or something similar.

Excuse me ?
I own two dogs of this breed, one can be aggressive and was attacked and my dog has been attacked 3 times by different dogs.NEVER once has he had a go back.
I know lets just ban ALL dogs from public places!
It's not the dogs fault,it's irresponsible owners,it's not breed specific either all breeds can be aggressive.

Re: Perfect walk ruined again.

And the reason i blame the dog,(partially anyway)the only times i ever have trouble with any other dogs on our walks it is always with staffs, the aggression and the willingness to turn without any sort of warning or indication of being irritated.I've NEVER seen it in any other breed. I now feel nervous for my dog and my kids whenever i see one in the area and make a move to avoid them.

Re: Perfect walk ruined again.

Please do not tar all staffords with the same brush that is unfair, you will always get an irresponsible owner of any given breed.
My bitch can be aggressive but she is kept onlead under control, you would be amazed at the amount of times we have been pestered by loose dogs with no recall.

We had a male ESS who was aggressive with other dogs, the dogs that attacked my boy were crossbreeds except one which was a collie, would it be fair to say all crossbreeds and collies are the same ? Not unless you wear blinkers and believe what's written in the press.

As for muzzling, unless ALL dogs are muzzled mine won't be,My dogs are kept under control at all times there is no way I would muzzle them so they can't defend themselves.
It's not the dogs that are at fault it's the owners!

Re: Perfect walk ruined again.

I think breeders should be more responsible and not sell dogs that were originally bred for fighting to young single lads. In my area I always see big groups of lads causing trouble and 9/10 of them have a staffy with them. Its a shame for the breed because obviously in many cases they have shown to be excellent family dogs

Re: Perfect walk ruined again.

Ok,maybe the owners of the staffs in my town are all morons, that is for sure but it doesnt change my opinion that these dogs have an inbred instinct for agression toward other dogs.they were bred to fight in the pits and while that can be controlled by responsible owners most of the time there will always be an element of doubt in my mind that one will turn on my dog,or god forbid,on one of my children.I will always try to avoid close contact with one whether this is taking my kids from the park or crossing the street whenever i see one not entirely under its owners control.
