a few pregnancy questions!!

hello,, its my first time on the site today so got a few questions really,
i decided recently to breed from my boxer martha and had sucess twice on the 11 and 13 day into her season, iv read that you wont really tell untill 5/6 week properly its been 2.5 weeks and she has calmed down alot as she has a crazy temprement usually she is mad never sits still, but after her first season she chilled for a few weeks after but then went back to normal so not sure if this is a sign of pregnancy will have to wait a bit longer i think.
My main question is, she is a skinny dog which i know is the boxer build but she should carry more weight than she does i personally think and althou she does eat ok as long as my other two are in the room she hasn't the biggest appitite (not for food anyhow) but if she is pregnant shall i feed her more or an extra meal? i worry that she is a bit to skinny to carry healthily! also is there a rough amount of puppies to a breed (obviously not in all case's) and last but not least does her excersize routine have to change as she mental on a walk she bounces every where!! thanks for reading abi

Re: a few pregnancy questions!!

In whelp bitches don't need any extra food at first, just change her to puppy food. Then increase gradually at about 6 or 7 weeks until birth. You will have to feed her 3-5 small meals a day, as her growing babies will mean less room for food.

However, you need to get her pregnancy confirmed before you change anything. For this, you can have her scanned at around 30-35 days.

With regard to size of litters, yes, each breed does have an average number of pups. Book of the bitch says up ro 10 pups for boxers, but only gives a figure of around 6 at registration. I am not sure if this is still accurate or if boxers make clumsy/poor mothers. A friend of a friend certainly lost a boxer puppy in the time it took her to make coffee, as the bitch laid on the pups.

Have you got many bookings for pups? I think people are having a hard time selling pups at the moment, even some established breeders.

Re: a few pregnancy questions!!

Our old girl had 10 (7 live) and our other girls litter earlier this year had 8 (7 live) We have had 2 litters and both have gone to plan, both delivered on due days and both mums were excellent but i must add that for at least 2 weeks i was close by and spent 2 weeks sleeping next to whelping box.

You will need to increase food towards the end of pregnancy........dont worry you will be able to tell as our Lucy just wouldnt stop eating.
As for calming down she will do that herself, Ours stopped jumping from 7 weeks on her own acord but still ran round like a looney!!!!!

Smile Re: a few pregnancy questions!!

thanks for replys, i dont really have much experience with breeding i had a dog in the past that had just one pup she was only a small dog herself and the pup was almost as big as her and she had three vets say she was having a phantom! a then one day she was acting very strange and sure enough she gave birth to max, she didnt make a good mum so between his persistance with feeding from her and my many night feeds he pulled throu and buy four weeks he would squeze throu the stair gate and bound up and down the stairs!!
i have read up on many sites about breeding but would rather get some advice from people with experience.
i have checked out the prices of pups and they are still around about £400 so im hoping that they are still selling well as the price is still the same,i have worked out tht they would be due on 29th october and ready to go christmas eve, (not sure if that a good thing or a bad) !! so i think we will be spending this christmas with them too it will be crazy ! thanks again for replys most helpfull xx

Christmas is a nightmare time to be finding homes for pups! You may well find homes easily, only to find that the pups have been passed on not long after when the novelty wears off.

Properly bred boxers also go for about £600-£700 a time, not £400. Not sure where you got £400 from? To do things properly it is likely to cost you about £4000 upwards if this is your first litter, so don't expect to make any money.

Also, going up and down stairs is very bad for a young puppy.

What on earth is going to cost £4000?

My jack russell had 2 pups in april sold them for £150 each, apart from extra food & worming tablets they cost me nothing, she gave birth in her crate in my living room where they stayed until weaning

Even with vet checks, vaccs, kc, puppy packs & dew claws no way will it cost £4000

Re: a few pregnancy questions!!

About prices of Boxers, it depends the area you are in. £400 roughly is what I see them selling for. That's with health checks, vaccinations, puppy packs etc.

Our pups were £700 each down here in the South and they were classed as cheap!!!! They had vet checks, 1st vacc etc.

The costs of a litter mount up when you take into account the stud fee, extra food for mum , whelping box etc not to mention your time, when you times that by 7 and add jabs, puppy packs, registration fees etc it all adds up. Not to mention any vet treatment/ceacer costs if needed if it go's wrong.
