Same here. I make a point of getting Milo really wound up to the point he is darting about the room bouncing off the sofas and pouncing on me, he will still stop instantly on command.

Re: Play Fighting

I think its fine if you are in control of how rough things get and you are the one to start the game and you then decide to stop it. i feel it should act a little as a treat for your dog it gives them some thing to work on.

Re: Play Fighting

I just wanted to ask from those who said that they are the ones that start play. Why?? does it matter who starts?? mine come and ask for play off us often, what if the person never wanted to play or when they did the dog want interested. I understand the whole they stop when they are told thing otherwise things can get out of hand but surely there is no harm in the dog starting the play??

I'm not so rough with the pups but we're working up to it, if I start a play fight with Milo the pups will come and join in, they've never been forced to play fight.

I think it's benefitted Trinny no end. She was very nervous and acted like we were going to beat her all the time when we first got her. Play fighting has built up her confidence and showed her that a raised hand is not something to be feared. We just have to stop her being scared of food bowls now!

Does it heck lead to aggression. Granted some dogs might not like it and of course if they are scared will be aggressive but that doesn't mean play fighting will lead to an aggressive dog.

yea totally agree I have two akitas and they love to fight with us and they are so gentle with me but much rougher with my partner

Re: Play Fighting

I don't play rough with mine...
And the reason being..
I used to play tug of war with Maizie and she is very strong.. Anyway I was out on a walk and I used to use lead ropes...(my horse rope) Anyway I was chatting with someone, Maizie suddenly started to play tug of war, using the rope.. She dragged me onto the road.... And she had totally turned off so wasn't listening..

I no longer play games like that. If she goes for the rope then I tell her off..

Plus the other form of playing fighting I don't want to encourage and her loose her head.. At the end of the day they are dogs and don't always realise they are hurting us.
