Staffordshire Terriers

Ok so i have been doing some research on various breeds ect and I have a question to pose about Staffies.

There seem to be two types, one i really like the look and sound of, the other is borderline ugly !

Type 1:

Typically taller and thinner such as...

This one : I know it says American Staffordshire Terrier but really...any difference ?

and this one

Also this one

Type 2:

Short dumpy horrible looking things (imo - please dont be offended) like...

this

this

and this

SO is there anyway of differentiating the two or is it simply luck of the draw. I see 3-4 of Daisy's (Labrador) Brothers and Sisters and quite a few of them are chunky things now. I look at daisy and she looks alot younger than most of the others. Shiny-er, Faster, certainly more intelligent but skinny!!!

Point being is that id not have a problem owning one of the taller...more....dog looking ones of the above examples but really could do without the short stumpy ones. Anyway of telling from a puppy ? Or is there an english staffy and an american one ? What ? What goes on here ?

I remember a few weeks back there was a post in this forum of a woman who had just breeded from a staffy, i made a post asking what breed the dog in the picture was but i cannot find that post anymore. Point being is that that Staff looked DAMN cool.

Im sorry if i have offended any of you stumpy-staff owners. Its just my opinion, i appreciate they are still fully qualified dogs...just not my cup of tea.

Re: Staffordshire Terriers

They do change slightly from breeder to breeder in build and hight and some seem to be a lot more stocky than others. I think some from america look a little different some times. In the way there ears hang. Im sure some of the staff owners on here can help you more.

Re: Staffordshire Terriers

the second horrible dumpy looking things are the rite way a staffy should look...cant see pic one of the horrible dumpy looking things but pic 2 of the horrible dumpy looking things is a excellent looking staffy in my honest opinion

1st set look like pits to me.

i think if ur seriously concidering to get one of them taller lean ones, then go for a irish staffy bull....or unless go for a badley bred staff...that will suite wat ur afta lol.

Re: Staffordshire Terriers

The top ones look to tall. They look a little like my brother american bulldog. But bet im wrong sorry not much help. Staffs are normally quite well built and there legs are a bit shorter than the first lot of pics.

Re: Staffordshire Terriers

What do they look like to you ? Cos i wouldnt mind one of them.

I mean, ideally id like a lab but my GF owns one of them and.....i dunno....seems a bit....cheesy, We have matching hoodies (accidental) and we will almost certinaly have matching coats in the winter, matching dogs is the last thing i want

So im settling slowly on a whippet (a bit thin looking) staffy (a bit podgy looking sometimes) or a Lab cross (if i can find one on this earth!!!).

I been feeling really guilty recently as i have half the people (usually trainers and other dog owners) i speak to saying that theres no way i should let Daisy off the lead as she doesnt come back (need more recall training) when other dogs are about and one day shes gonna greet a mean dog at 30mph and regret it..or a car.

The other half are asking how i can be so cruel keeping a young lab on a leash for so long....wtf ppl !!!

We do 30mins (collectively) of off-lead recall training on EVERY walk we go on...well...unless its a 'please please owners, i have drunk too much water, i know its 2am but i REALLY need to pee' kinda walk. We have upped the treatage from Coachies treats --> to beef and something stinky chews --> Cheese --> Ham --> Salami --> Lamb chunks !!!

We have a 100% recall rate at home, in garden and in tennis courts even when other dogs are about. Its just when she KNOWS its her choice to come back or not, not the fact that there are walls, leashes restricting her that she.....one sec, this is a post about staffies !!

Sorry about that.

Point being is that now i am trying to be super vigilant in choosing a breed that is going to get on well with Daisy, without picking up her shocking habits of eating the arm her toys are in, not coming back ect ect.

Re: Staffordshire Terriers

the leggy one,s are often pitbull crosses which i agree are better looking than the short legged ,the short legged are proper staffs usually unless there crossed with sumthing smaller like the jrt they are all nice but i like the leggy ones best thats why i bought one a few weeks ago he is a cracking looking dog and very clever

Re: Staffordshire Terriers

If you like whippets have you thought of rescuing a greyhound they are fab pets although you may have to work on the recall also.
