a shitzu is alot smaller then a bully aint it, so no doubt a bullys ops maywell work out more.
I know that the vets in my area (not sure about outside as I didn't enquire ) charge more for castration/spaying depending on the size of the dog, so this could be the same for other ops?

Also depends on what vet you go to as prices vary from vet to vet... even though I think they should all charge the same.

What is a cherry eye?

If there is something wrong you will need to declare it if and when you take out insurance. They will not then cover this (i don't think) so if it is an on-going problem you will be paying up yourself.

He looks lovely. Why is he being rehomed? What was his past home like? Temperement/current behaviours are a big consideration on a rescue dog. Will you have the time to sort out any possible behaviour issues? A 1 year old is easier to sort then an adult.

I share concern about his eye. Keep us posted on your decision and good luck!!

Re: Dog advice required please

Definately get the eye checked out - book an appointment with a vet to asses his overall health before you buy it'll cost about 30 for a quick check but will be worth the spend and you can get a quote for the eye at the same time.
I would visit the dog in it's own home and also take it for a walk to assess his temperment and behaviour a bit, also offer him some food and toys to check he's not aggressive over them.
Ask how he is with kids, other dogs, cats etc. if poss see him interact with some of these - so try to walk him in a busy area.
If he is bred from pedigree stock there should be papers so you can check the health of his parents.
And definately ask loads of questions - don't be shy and really push for full answers - most importantly find out why they are rehoming, if it for a change in circumstances be nosey an find out exactly what, incase they are just fobing you off to over up a behavioural issue.
If you do decide to take him on, check out your local dog classes.
Good luck - let us know what you decide

Re: Dog advice required please

Loads of great advice people, much appreciated.

Max is owned by a friend of a friend who can no longer keep him as her husband is allergic to him. The price mentioned so far is £200 although that's not a drop dead figure and they are more concerned about the home he is going to, so they are as anxious to meet us, as we are them.

Being a pedigree isn't a real concern to me but we would like a dog that has similar personality traits to a bulldog, hence our interest here.

well @ 200 il say he is deffo not a british bulldog, unless they are very kind genuin people and only want the very best of homes and the price dont matter...but a 2 grand dog going for 200 does say not british bully.

mind you, he is gorgeous aint he, just make sure u mention about that eye, maybe even ring up ya vets and ask if they could give u an idea on the price to remove cherry eye in a bulldog.

Re: Dog advice required please

If these are genuine people that you are dealing with (and I hope they are) they will not mind you asking questions about the dog and his suitability for you and your lifestyle.
I'd suggest that you ask who is the current vet for the dog and then get your vet to ask for the dog's health records and give him a health check on your behalf.

I too am worried about the eye and wonder if the present owners have had the dog to the vet and heard that it does need expensive treatment - and that is the real reason for parting with him.

I think you have to be very cautious - other people have commented about insurance issues and known conditions. Contact the dog warden in the area where the people live and see if the dog is 'known' to them. Go and ask the neighbours if the dog barks a lot, he could have separation anxiety and bark the whole time if he's left alone.

Or he could be a lovely dog with a gentle nature that is losing a home through no fault of his own.

Good luck!

Re: Dog advice required please

Yeah the price to me says he isn't full breed but he is a gorgeous dog, and as long as he doesn't have behaviour or health problems then that's all that matters to me. The owners are aware of the problem with the eye and will be sorting that out in advance of any sale.

I'd like to go see him a few times and see how he behaves on each occassion, and by all accounts the owners wasnt to ensure we are just as suitable for the dog.

I haven't personally contacted the owners as yet, but now I have plenty of helpful pointers I can get onto that.

Thanks to everyone.
