Grooming a German Spitz

Hello, I have a German Spitz Klein that is currently 4 months old and is starting to shed his baby coat with new adult hair coming through.

I have been grooming him with a slicker brush but since his coat is growing out I am wondering whether I need to groom him with another type of brush.

I *think* a porcupine brush is a good brush for a German Spitz but I just wanted to double check with the more experienced dog owners here on the forum.

Is there any other grooming products / tips that you would recommend as well?

Many thanks for your help!

Re: Grooming a German Spitz

We use a pin brush on our spitz and brush forwards from his tail towards his head.

Re: Grooming a German Spitz

I have a breed with a very similar coat as your German Spitz-I start off by using a slicker brush to get rid of any dead undercoat, and brush out the breeches and tail- then I comb out the hair round the ears and the feathering down the back of the legs I then spray a texturising conditioner called Crown n Glory ( get it from DeZynaDog: The One Stop Shop for Groomers ) and brush against the lie of the coat using a good quality bristle brush ( I use Mason Pearson brushes - expensive but worth every penny !) keep brushing until the spray has completely dried and then get your dog to shake ( a trick to get them to do this is to gently blow in their faces !! and give the command 'shake' -this will give loads of volume to the coat )

I also check on their teeth and clean if needed and check nails at the same time - my lot are groomed once a week when not being shown and daily during the show season.

HUB International (Mr & Mrs G Urquhart) Pin Brush

I use these for my Pomeranian and Pomeranian X.

"Oblong Pin Brush NO Ball tips /Rosewood"

I was recommended this brush by my pom's breeder who uses this to primp her dogs for showing.

Never use a slicker/pin brush without first wetting the coat to help prevent breakage.
