What dog?
Hi, Im new to this forum.
![]() We are moving from our apartment to a house in the country with a lot of land, so we are thinking about getting a dog. I have always grown up with labs, but my partner has grown up with german shepard. We want a dog, that will be a good watch dog, and be a bit scary looking for security purposes, but not a dog that is likely to bite. Now, a lab is not a scary dog at all, but I really want one so badly, but my partner doesnt. Im not overly keen on German Shepards, purely because his mums dog terrifies me, as it was bought as a guard dog, and I never like the looks it gives me lol. We need a happy meduim. Any suggestions. We want a big dog. Neither of us are keen on small dogs at all. Also, if we get two dogs, is it best to get a 2 males? We have to seriously think about this as dogs arent cheap!! Thanks, Karen. |

Re: What dog?
Welcome to the forum.
![]() If you get two dogs in my opinion it's best/easiest to get one of each but if you've both grown up with dogs then I'm sure you'd cope with two boys, it's not a good idea to get two litter mates though, any breeder worth anything wouldn't sell you two pups from the same litter anyway. If you're thinking of two why not get a Lab and a GSD? ![]() How about a Northern Inuit? ![]() |

Re: What dog?
A bergamasco sounds ideal for your needs - they are bred for guarding, but their guarding is the "barking-a-warning" type guarding, not the "I'm-going-to-kill-you" type guarding. They love people, children and other animals - only trouble is, they're as rare as hen's teeth at the moment unless you want to import one from Europe or the USA!

Re: What dog?
Nice one louise.... That mad me roar. I agree though male and a female combo are better and was told once that its a good idear to get from different litters and to get one first and when that one has settled get the other. Two litter mates run the risk of bickering and a few people have had problems with 2 from the same litter as they get in the teen stage. P.S. labs can also be good watch dogs and i would not battle with one. Our grandads lab would not let strangers enter the gardens with out kicking up a stink.

Re: What dog?
Ah thanks for the info Sullivan
I would say LabLabLab but I'm biased i love them to pieces Our dog (who is mainly lab...) barks like crazy if he hears anyone outside or if anyone comes in the house, which is good for alerting. hopefully this will scare any robbers away before they realise hes barking cuz hes so excited to see them and wants to lick them to death lol... |
