When my parents moved to scotland, they took the lab with them. He is 9years old, and still acts like a new puppy. He rarely rarely barks, and his tail never ever stops wagging! He is such a lovely dog.

My autie owns a boxer, who is a big dopey thing. Cute as anything, but I dont think i would like to own a boxer though.

I love the look of black german shepards, but i think they are hard to come across. A German shepard would be fine as long as it is trained properly, same as all dogs, but I would still be so so wary of them. Dont know why though!!

I also think a black lab would look a lot more scary than a golden one.

Is there difference in temperments between choc/gold/black labs, or is it just the colour?
Think most labs have great temps if they are brought up right regardless of their colour.

How about a great dane, the size would put anyone off but they are big softies who love and protect their family and their great with kids

Re: What dog?

You should get an Akita. They are great guard dogs, Loyal, great with kids & if your looking to scare people away most people look at them and find them scary.

Re: What dog?

How about a Dogue de Bordeuax or a mastiff - they are lovely dogs, loving and loyal. Also, I agree with Mrs D about the schnauzer although the DDB takes less grooming - i'd definetly recommend one.

Otherwise maybe a rescue? Staffies are perfect family pets and there are a few in rescue crossed with mastiff and other bigger breeds (ggrrrrr) but need a loving home and are bigger dogs :-)

Re: What dog?

HI
If you like the thought of a gsd as long as it is trained have you thought of getting a pre trained gsd. Some security firms retire or sell dogs that have not quite passed most are advertised as good with children. I must admit I have never done this so it may require a bit of searching for the right trainer.

Re: What dog?

I had actually thought about an akita, but i dont really know much about them to be honest. They are gorg dogs!
I would prefer to get a dog as a puppy so I know everything about it.

Would it be ok to have a lab and a German Shepard. If so, should they both be got at the same time, or get one first, then introduce the other?

i agree a ddb they look feirce but wont bite, they are a few in rescue at the mo so you wont have to pay too much for them. nobody will come anywhere near your house with one of these barking at the fence. They would realise if they got any closer all the want is kisses! lol

dogue de bordeaux welfare have a look google it

We are moving from our apartment to a house in the country with a lot of land, so we are thinking about getting a dog.
I have always grown up with labs, but my partner has grown up with german shepard.
We want a dog, that will be a good watch dog, and be a bit scary looking for security purposes, but not a dog that is likely to bite.
Now, a lab is not a scary dog at all, but I really want one so badly, but my partner doesnt. Im not overly keen on German Shepards, purely because his mums dog terrifies me, as it was bought as a guard dog, and I never like the looks it gives me lol.
We need a happy meduim. Any suggestions. We want a big dog. Neither of us are keen on small dogs at all.
Also, if we get two dogs, is it best to get a 2 males?
We have to seriously think about this as dogs arent cheap!!

Thanks, Karen.
you know the best animals for guarding are infact geese,

LOL that must be true - they are scary. Swans must be up there as well. The ones at Hampstead Heath are frightening b*ggers!
