Re: weaning

2 1/2 to 3 weeks old. 3 weeks is the latest. I have a large breed though, I think some toy breeds start later, but not really sure.

I don't give them goats milk, or any othe rmilk, just puppy food soaked in hot water at first and blended to make a 'porridge'. Then gradually thicken it, and then add less water/soak it less until they are ating either dry or only dampened food by 8 weeks.

I don't give milk as I believe that the whole point of weaning is to get them off milk and they don't need it. Plus, everyone I know who does give milk gets pups with the runs. I have never had a pup with the runs.

Re: weaning

It's not the weaning, it's the taking part that counts.

Re: weaning

Its some years since I had puppies to wean but when I did , depending on the size of the litter, I would start at about 31/2 to 4 weeks. I never gave them any kind of milk, started them on scraped beef about the size of a marble to start with. Once a day for 2 days then twice, then three times by then you should be able to put down fine mince either beef or lamb, when they are taking this readily add a breakfast of soaked puppy meal, dont use milk to soak it, just boiled cooled water. Milk can really upset tummies.
We didn't have complete meal in my time but these days I would offer this dry and soaked.

Re: weaning

I weaned abbies lot at 3 weeks... i just mushed up some puppy food to start... at 4 weeks i soaked dry kibble for 20 mins and then mushed it up with some raw beef.. they are 6 weeks now and they have soft kibble, sometimes with some fish in it..

Actually i have a question.. when should i be putting them onto proper hard kibble (ie not soaked in anything)
