Hello there, as the title suggests we would really love to have a dog in our family and as I am a stay at home mum I have the time to devote to a pet. The thing is our little one is only 8 months old at the moment, do people think we should wait until baby is a bit older or can anyone suggest good breeds of dogs that be better with small children?
Thankyou for your time. x |

Re: A good dog to have with a baby.....
Hi there. I was brought up with dogs from a young age and am now a dog trainer. My advice would be to get a puppy if you have the time and dedication to train it. I know a lot of people will probably say you are crazy to get a puppy as it is hard work especially if you have a baby, however choosing the right puppy is essential and you can train it from a young age where bad habits have not been developed. I suggets you make a list of the things you like doing and how much time you have as this should influence the breed of dog that you get.
Bear in mind a puppy requires time and attention but if you start with a structured routine like with a baby it can be very easy to integrate a dog into your family. A dog can be a very faithful companion if it has the right training from the start. It needs to know that you are the pack leader and must understand its place in the pack. This is not by treating it like a child and ensuring it understands that it can't have your attention all the time but it understanding that it cannot always demand attention by barking and yapping. That it doesn't always get attention when it demands it. One of the best family dogs to have is a black or yellow labrador. They generally have fantastic temperaments and are very easy to train. If you can find a good breeder who has hip, elbow and eye scored the sire and damn you are on to a winner. Prices vary considerably. I hope this helps. If you require further information please don't hesitate to contact me. Naomi |

Re: A good dog to have with a baby.....
I currently have a 21month old Staffy cross, and 3yo JRT cross.
My children are 5 and 6 months. We are adding a german shepherd to the family next summer. I agree, any dog is only as good as its owner and the training it gets, it depends on the amount of time etc you have available to dedicate to a dog/puppy. I am now into a well established routine with my baby and she will be over a year by the time puppy comes, my dogs fit in around my children and some days don't get a walk until OH comes home from work at 5, but they get plenty of attention during the day.

Re: A good dog to have with a baby.....
like has been said before i think any pup would be good so long as you have the time and dedication. i was brought up with a springer and my god she was the best dog ever, well to me anyway, she would follow me around everywhere and sleep on my bed at night. she had pups once and i woke up and realised something was wrong as she wasn`t with me and found her in her nest with the pups and slept in there the rest of the night with her. that was a long time ago but just brought it up to show how any breed can be good. candy however wouldn`t let anyone near my buggy when i was a baby and was very protective of me so that`s another thing to consider.

Re: A good dog to have with a baby.....
staffies are known as the nanny dog, they love people - especially children! There's thousands in rescues up and down the country, the rescue near me frequently has puppies as well from pregnant bitches that come in so I'm sure you'd manage to find a pup who you could start from scratch with and train really well.
I'd personally go to a rescue and ask if it's possible to foster a dog with a view to adopt. You can find a dog that's listed as good with children and see if s/he fits well with your family. It's also a great way to make sure you're up to all the responsibilities before you make that big commitment. |

Re: A good dog to have with a baby.....
Newfoundland were bought to be nannies to children in victorian times. The one in Peter Pan was originally a newfoundland, though he usually gets portrayed as a St Bernard or an Old English sheepdog!
Newfoundlands are the best, though most people don't want the hair and the slobber! And they do take up an awful lot of room. I would opt for a golden retriever myself.

Re: A good dog to have with a baby.....
My children were brought up with Staffs. Despite what people say about them now with all the bad owners etc. Staffs are wonderful dogs with kids - used to be known as the "nanny dog" because they are so great with them.
I love them! ![]()

Re: A good dog to have with a baby.....
A rescue staffie with a proven history with children would be perfect. They can be a bit mouthy as puppies so an adult would probably be better. Failing that a newfoundland, saint bernard or golden retriever. It does depend on the owner and the work they're willing to put in but some breeds are better with children than others.
