Re: A good dog to have with a baby.....

You've been given lots of advise on different breeds , my advise would to wait until you baby is a bit older. I got my dog when my daughter was 6 months old and i resented how much work she was along side a young baby and how much time she and attention she took away form my daughter. Maybe that was just me but i would say wait another 6 -12 m until you little one is a little more independent. You don't want a baby crawling through the puppy pooh while your trying to clear it up

Wise words.
You also need to make sure that ,whatever dog you choose, you thoroughly research your breed and buy from a good breeder.
Iv always had dogs as well as babies/children and never had any real problems but you will need to be organised and do plenty of training.Organise your house to accommodate both dog and baby.
Good luck whatever you decide

Re: A good dog to have with a baby.....

Personally, I wouldn`t have a puppy round small children. They wind each other up.
And any dog will need socialising with your children, even if they have lived with children before, just as children need to be taught to respect dogs.
My sons all grew up with GSDs - they all survived.

Re: A good dog to have with a baby.....

Thankyou so much for all your replies, it has definately given me some food for thought! I will probably wait until little one is a wee bit older before making the commitment then, but at the moment we are considering a Lab pup. Although Staffies are my favourite breed and I know they have lovely temperements, I worry that they may be a bit strong and bouncy for me and it's not so much that I'm worried about them with children as teaching my baby to be gentle with the dog . Being a first time mum I'm still learning a lot as it is! I just want my son to grow up with a dog as I did when I was little, I think it can teach children a lot.

Thankyou for your time.

Newfoundlands are the best, though most people don't want the hair and the slobber! And they do take up an awful lot of room.

I would opt for a golden retriever myself.

I never knew that about Peter Pan! Learn something new everyday

I think you will find that a labrador is just as bouncy, if not more so, than a staffie. Don't be fooled by the Andrex advert!

Re: A good dog to have with a baby.....

As others have said all breeds are suitable, depending on the upbringing of the dog.

Of course the Labrador is the most looked upon as a family dog, as it's greatly advertised as one.

I myself was bought up around Boxers, and people say they are very strong and bouncy, yet we had no problems because of how many parents bought them up.

I've heard a lot of people suggest GSD's, due to their protective-ness over their owners.

Also take into consideration things like maulting, size of dog, cost of food a month, whether you want a dog that drools or not, health problems etc

Also look into cross-breeds as you can really get some decent dogs, and it's said they are better health problems wise.

So lot's to consider

Re: A good dog to have with a baby.....

You know I was only telling my neighbor staffies are better

Personally a Staffie is better with kids than what a lab would be.
