Rottweiler thinks toy is a puppy

We have a six year old Rott, who has been a loving part of our family.
She's never had a temper, and has never shown any signs of agression.
I recently bought her a toy that squeaks. She has since then, started to behave very strange. She keeps the toy under her chin, and protects it as if it is a puppy. She has started to pant heavily, as though she is making milk, she cleans it, she wont get off the couch and leave it, and has started to growl, even snap at anyone who gets near it. Has this ever happened to anyone?

Re: Rottweiler thinks toy is a puppy

is she spayed?
If not it sounds like a phantom pregnancy to me... the vets would probably like to check her out and give her something to straighten out her hormones or something

hello. first off you need to take the toy away from her and dont give it back. if she is having a phantom pregnancy i would reduce her food intake and up her walks. would for now stop her getting up onto sofa and keep her out of spaces where she can make it her own.

Re: Rottweiler thinks toy is a puppy

When the Weimy was preggers the dobie started to bag up as well.. The vet told me to cut her food down and exercise her more..

I would take the toy off her she sounds a little confused..

When I was a kiddie a friends GSD had pups and she killed one by lying on it by accident, Well I gave her a toy and it was a hand, she thought it was a pup and wouldn't let anyone near it.. Poor girl.

Re: Rottweiler thinks toy is a puppy

my two go bonkers over squeaky toys, to the point that if one has destroyed his, we have to remove the other as mikito gets all possessed over his and is clearly uncomfortable with putting it down in case reno gets it. when they were younger and had their first squeaky toy they did have their one and only real fight over it. we banned them then reintroduced them but will not leave only one incase they fight. i think its the squeak that makes them funny. mikito will not put it down for anything, but does allow us to take it away.

Couldnt agree more Estalea - take it off her and dont give her it back - any kind of guarding/protecting behaviour should be strongly discouraged
