Smile First walk

Where did you and your dog go for his or her first walk?

I took Oscar for a walk down the road yesterday. We didn't get very far. He sniffed every blade of grass as if he'd never seen grass before! However, he did very well considering he's 11 weeks and it was his first venture out on his lead.

Today was Oscar's first proper walk. We went to the park with a friend of mine. We tried to cross a road but he got half way across, sat down and refused to move. So, that needs some practice. When we got to the park, he was not happy at all. I sat on a bench and gave him a cuddle and he was shaking like crazy. Eventually, he got used to his new surroundings, he especially loved watching the boys in the skating rink. We only met one other dog and Oscar didn't get to play. There were hardly any people around considering it was a sunny day. We had a pleasant stroll around the park and he walked so beautifully all the way home - hardly any pulling on the lead! I felt like I was actually walking my dog home as opposed to coaxing him to move every inch!

I can't wait to go properly exploring.

Re: First walk

Aww that sounds fantastic. I can't wait to take Toby out - only three more weeks!

We went to the park the other day with him in my arms, he was shaking the whole time haha, the big wuss. I'll be taking him back though and to lots of other places so he can get used to them a bit before being expected to walk there without the reassurance of mummy's arms.

Re: First walk

Thats great Puppys just don't understand the forward thing on the lead.. Its a great sense of achievement when they do finally start to trot along quite happily..

Re: First walk

Well done Oscar, the big wide world must be SO scary for a young puppy. Sounds to me like he is going to be easy to train to the lead. Theres nothing worse than when they sit down and refuse to move. Been there, done that, LOL

Re: First walk

Both mine went for their first proper walks at 11 weeks old. Our boy Logan walked on the lead as though he'd been doing it forever It was a hot, sunny sunday and we just went for a short walk round the block and got stopped by everyone out mowing their lawns.... he loved it!

Our girl Piper was completely different, it was a miserable wet day and she would not walk while she was on the lead. We went about 5 paces in about 15 minutes. We eventually got to the field across from our house and let her off the lead, she absolutely loved it but didn't go too far from us. It was a battle again on the lead on the way back. She was a pain in the arse to walk on the lead for about a week, even though practising in the house she was fine
