Crying

It's Toby's first night and I know he's just missing his mum and things but we've not even gone to bed yet and he's crying

I keep telling myself it's because he's homesick but it's still heart wrenching, I'm doing everything I can to take his mind off it, games, cuddles, everything! I know it'll stop but it doesn't mean I'll hate it any less, makes me want to cry.

Re: Crying

The first night or two is always the worse when getting a new puppy. Did the breeder give you something with the mums scent on it?? Will he be going to sleep in your room tonight then?

Oh poor baby. It is making me sad thinking about my little girl that went to her new home today.

Re: Crying

The breeder didn't give me anything, and yeah he's sleeping in my room hehe. He will be when he's big too though. One of my parents conditions, seen as he's going to be MY dog.

Re: Crying

I'm not sure if you've been told about these things but this is what I did (mine's only been home 2 weeks);
- Ticking clock wrapped in a towel by his bed
- A t-shirt to remind him of the scent of me
- A smelly toy from his breeder's house

Is Toby going to be crated?

The worst thing you can do, at night, is to go down to him. I know it's heartbreaking but it's for the best. We had 3 or 4 horrendous nights and now he's a little angel. It does get easier. Hang in there!

Re: Crying

Thanks for the advice, he's just had his last meal and in a bit I'm going to take him out then it's bedtime

I'm going to put a hot water bottle under his blanket and give him something that smells like me too...but I know the first night will be the hardest.

Re: Crying

like englishrose said the first couple of nights will be the worst. you could try giving him an old tshirt of yours with your smell on it or even leave a radio on so he can hear a little noise. you can get dog toys with heartbeats in them which go in a pups bed to try and help soothe them like this Comfort Pal only £12.99 - more puppy comforter heartbeat heart comfort pal heart beat toy - www.canineconcepts.co.uk
i've not used these and think they're maybe a bit pricey, but they do look good

Re: Crying

When my pups leave me i always give them a goody bag which includes, Blanket with mum and the rest of the litters scent on it, a toy which they have played with, puppytreats etc. I do t agree with the T Shirt thing to so the puppy can smell you.
