Exclamation my shep cries all night!

hi i came across this website when looking for answers on my pup and wondered if anyone could help....
i have an 8 week old pedigree german shep, Odin.
hes loving and playful and he really is a beatiful dog...
he has gotten very attached to me since we brought him home in the car and he looked upon me for comfort.
he has a crate in which he has one half bed the other puppy pads as he cannot go outside yet with no injections and an upset tummy. he has a curtain over his crate and he has his cuddley toy in there. but he still crys all night long .... thinkin it was best i ignored him for the past 3 nights but now im seeking help
weve tried:
a ticking clock
a hot water bottle
teddies
music
tv
light left on
the one thing i havent tried yet is an old tshirt tht i have worn all day
any advice people?
thanks kindly!!

Re: my shep cries all night!

Hi, congratulations on your new puppy!

I don't like the leaving them to cry method myself. The pup has gone from being surrounded by it's mum and siblings in the only place it has ever known to being alone in a strange place with only you to rely on.

I would sleep next to the crate at first then gradually move further away from him over a number of nights so the pup can understand that you are always close by if he needs you.

Re: my shep cries all night!

I personally found the leaving to cry method wasn't for me.
I put the crate in my room at the beginning and moved it down stairs as soon as they could go all night.

Do you have your own garden? If so you can take the puip out to the toilet there.
I'd partition the crate so it is only big enough for his bed, then start taking him out during the night when he wakes, no talking, fussing or eye contact - just take him straight outside and back into his crate.

Don't forget 8 weeks is a crucial time for socialisation so carry your pup out and about to get used to the big wide world.

And also photo's are very important - we need to see lots

Re: my shep cries all night!

i had to take him to the vets as he has an upset stomach, we were told not to take him outside into the garden as we have previously had another dog in the garden until hes fully vaccinated

Re: my shep cries all night!

As long as the other dog that used the garden is fully vaccinated i don't see why your pup can't go out. As that will be about a month from first jab till 2 weeks after 2nd jab toilet training will be a nightmare! I tend to sleep on the sofa for the first few nights and just say shush, if they have been out for toilet and need to settle to sleep again.

I wouldn't want to go against vet advise - but I'd still make his bed the right size for him to sleep and put the puppy pads next to the back door, so once it's safe to go out into the garden it's a small change for the pup.

Just a thought, might be worth checking with the vet- Do you know if the previous dog was fully up to date with vacinations and worming, if so would it not be safe to use the garden? And/or could you disenfect the patio and just use that to start off with?
I think avoiding puppy pads if possible can be less confusing for the pup although I have used them myself when we had to leave our pups for short periods I wouldn't recomend them if they can be avoided.

And don't for get pictures Fluffy pup pics needed

And don't forget to socialise him - get out and about with pup in arms

So sorry to hear this. How long ago was this?
We moved into our house they had had a dog previously but our Vet said as long as there was no feces around then it would be fine.
