puppies eyes

My litter of puppies have opened there eyes except one puppy who is a little bit behind the others. He is much smaller. We are on day 19 now and he still hasn't opened them. Has anyone experienced a puppy not opening there eyes till later. He is the runt of the litter so it may be that it will take longer, I feel I will leave it till he is 4 weeks old. Any suggestions. I would hate it if he was blind.

Re: puppies eyes

They do all open their eyes at different times. How long ago did the others open their eyes?

If he is smaller, make sure you always put him on the back teats, as they are more productive. This usually means supervising feeding. Also, if the others are pushing him off, you can take the smaller pup and Mum out of the whelping box so he can feed by himself for a while. You should aim to get an evenly sized litter, with no 'runt'.

Re: puppies eyes

The puppy was born with no sac or fluid around him at all, he was much smaller and had an undershot jaw, he is always going to be smaller. I have found him a home with a veterinary nurse so he will be well looked after. I have been putting him with the mother on his own and will do so when the litter start to pick on him, as Im sure they will, although he will have to have some interaction with them.
