Re: Dog Meeting Cat
I have the same problem now too so I am looking forward to some suggestions. No problem with maya as she has been raised with cats since she us born. Cobi is the problem. He doesn't know what a cat is. He is scared and barks at them and they don't like it!! They growl at him when he just looks at them. The cats don't mind maya. Had her on arm while she was smelling Hugo and kissing him

You must be soooo excited! That was us last weekend! lol. I had read previously that you should only give them access to a small space at a time, so we set up the crate in a corner of the dining room. This leads through to the kitchen where we can then let him out into the garden. At the moment, he's small enough not to escape anywhere ![]() So when we first arrived home and lifted him out of the car, we took him straight to the back garden and let him do his toilet. Then we put him down inside the dining room and he of course started to sniff around etc, but he was also interested in trying to nip at our ankles and pull our trousers etc! We waited a little while and then lifted him and placed him in the crate, naturally he started whining, as he wasn't used to being confined at his breeder's house. We waited a little while and then let him out, praised him lavishly and then let him back out into the garden and left the back door open- come to think of it, it's hardly been closed since he arrived. We had to be careful that the cats didn't get through from the dining room from the lounge otherwise our weegie would have been off. We do let them out occasionally into their cat house for play and fresh air etc, but if we let them out to roam free, we'd lose them for sure. Anyway, when it came to bedtime, we again lifted him into the crate, closed the door (this was after having given him his last meal of rice pudding and letting him out to toilet) and put all the lights off and went to bed. He did whine for about 20 minutes or so, but after that he slept through until 4.40. Next day, he was out early in the morning in the garden and then mid morning, I put him back into the crate and left him for about an hour - the house was empty. Again we did the same at t-time when we were eating our meal, then let him out again to play. Night time was the same routing - rice pudding, toilet, crate - and this time he whined for a little less time. Slep through to 5.30 that night I think. Each night, he's whined less but on the 3rd night, we covered the crate to try and keep out some of the early morning light and to try and make it more appealing to him. Last night he slept until only 4.15 this morning, but he did settle right away, with no whining. I think his early morning awakening had a lot to do with the horrendous thunderstorm we had here last night, although it did go on for a long time before he eventually barked. Hope all goes well for you on Sunday, where are you getting your pup from, have you got far to travel for him/her? Sally x |

Re: Dog Meeting Cat
I introduced Duke who was a puppy at the time to Jasper our cat without a crate but only for a few seconds/minutes at a time several times a day, my way was very slow, I didn't feel comfortable leaving them in the same room unsupervised although it happened by chance, we thought Jasper had gone out but no he had come back in.
The bond that developed between them over three years was greater than I had realised until Jaspers was pts in April this year. I now have two kittens that are growing fast and Duke even today has assumed the role of dad. He washes them everywhere ugh! and the kttens sprowl out and let him, they even come up to him for a wash or affection. He tells them off when they dive for his tail by turning round pushes them with his nose and a bark of authority and they will all settle down to sleep together. They are even allowed to take a bone from him and run off with it. I always take it off them and give it back to Duke. With Duke and Jasper I feared for Duke's safety but as Duke grew I then feared for Jasper's safety. Although how I introduced them was slow it paid off dividends. Sue |
