Puppy Advice!

Hi, this is a bit random but i need some advice to see if my dog is behaving normally! In the past I have always adopted older dogs (always over 5 years) My last pet dies of cancer a year ago and last week my husband and I decided it was time and adopted a new buddy. The problem is this dog is only 7mths old and so im not sure what is puppy behavior! She is a springer/collie and has tons of energy which i expected but its ok cuz she is super smart/ easy to train/ very calm in the house with no destructive behavior.
My concern is that she falls asleep all the time! we go for half hour walks and then do a half hour of play time 3 times a day and she immediately passes out when i bring her in each time. am i working her to much for her age? i also worry that if she keeps sleeping so much during the day it may affect her sleeping at night.
My last question is for any other springer/collie owners. are your dogs on the thin side? Josie seems very thin. the vet says she dosent have anything wrong with her but she needs to put on more weight. she eats all her food every day and treats but just dosent seem to put anything on. thoughts?

Re: Puppy Advice!

You really don't know how much exercise your dog has had over it's 7 months of life, it could have been virtually none. Also, she has obviously been underfed, which is not good for an older dog, let alone a growing puppy.
I think you will find, over the next few weeks, that she will gradually gain weight and energy.
Hope this helps and please update us on how you are getting along.

Re: Puppy Advice!

Hi,congrats on your new addition! Shes sounds great.I think the average school of thought on walking is about 5mins per every month of age,but that is just a generalised guide.I prefer not to walk to much in the first 12-18mths,but then i have labs.Hopefully those with similar breeds to you will come along and let you know what they do,as a guide.
If she wasnt excercised much in her previous home, she may be unfit and this may make her tired.
Some breed do tend to be quite thin in their first year or two and begin to fill out after that.My daughter had a gsd who was just so busy and he never put on any weight.A food change did help a bit.
What is your dog eating? Has she been wormed recently?
Enjoy having a youngster around, they grow up so fast!

Re: Puppy Advice!

Congratulations on your new edition - what's she called??

I'm sure once you all get to know one another and she settles in, it will be fine. I agree with what has been said - sounds as tho she perhaps isnt used to having much exercise. Maybe cut back a bit for a couple of days and see how she goes.

Re: Puppy Advice!

thanks for the advice. her name is Josie, hopefully she will put on weight, shes not underweight just a little thinner then i would like. she probably hasnt had as much exercise as she used to live in the city but were out in the country with a big yard she loves to run in.
I will try cutting her walks down and see how she goes.
Funny enough she is way more collie then springer! Her favorite thing is to stare down sheep in the neighboring fields

Re: Puppy Advice!

just been to the vet again and she is putting on weight! yay! also, just in the past week there has been a huge change in her energy, shes gone bonkers now! she is running around everywhere, always wants to be outside and just cant get enough of her toys!
problem is now sometimes she gets over excited and wont listen to her commands. any advice on getting her to focus? especially recall? i want to let her free run at the beach but im afraid she will take off after a bird or other dogs. shes so different then any other dog ive had i feel like its all new territory!

Re: Puppy Advice!

Its good to hear shes beginning to come out of her shell
Now thats shes beginning to relax she may start pushing boundaries,so make sure to do some training /teaching!
A long line may be good for beach walks to start with.
What food is she on?,food can have a big impact on a dogs behaviour.

Re: Puppy Advice!

I have a springer and she was very thin till she was about 2, I asked the vet about it and was told springers can be quite thin till they reach 1 - 2 years old and then will start to fill out witch is what happened to my springer.

As for the sleeping she is still only a pup and if she's not had the best of starts then it can take a while to build her stamina up.
