Crate Training

Our two pups are crate trained, we found it really easy as they had two nice beds to start with in a pen area together. When the crates came we just put the beds in the crates left the doors open for a few days (in the pen still) and they automatically went in to their beds. We then moved onto shutting the door at night and never had a problem all the way through.

Are your dogs crate trained? How easy did you find it and how beneficial do you feel it is?

Re: Crate Training

They have all been crate trained at some point.

I do it by leaving the crate open and leaving some treats int he back of it when they aren't looking, so they find them in there when they go in. Then I put something like a stuffed kong inside and shut the door with the pup on the outside, so pup wants to get in. Once pup is in I feed treats through the closed door and gradually build up the time the pup is left.

However, despite being crate trained, none of them currently use a crate at home,a nd the older one hasn't been in a crate for yonks. The younger two travel in a crate in the car if they are on their own, but otherwise no longer use a crate at home now they are toilet trained.

I find it beneficial to help with toilet training, and as I prefer to crate them for benching at shows if possible. otherwise, i probably wouldn't feel the need to have crate trained/using adults, but i don't leave them really, so never get problems with chewing etc.

Re: Crate Training

I own two rescue greyhounds, and we got them aged 6 and 5. They were terrified at the mere sight of a crate, and they both fear small spaces (I wonder if it reminds them of being shoved in the traps at the racetrack?). Either way, they do not need a crate anyway, we have no trouble leaving them, they've never chewed anything or done anything.

However if I had a puppy or perhaps any other breed, I would crate train. I know so many people have found them beneficial.

I'm not sure of the benefits as adults or even older puppies, it's been very beneficial up until now for toilet training but they've spent the last four nights with the crate doors open and been clean and good. When I've nipped out they've also been left with the run of the front of the house with no problems.

Jayjay prefers to go downstairs and sleep on the laminate floor at night and Trinnys happy to sleep under the bed with Milo. Neither of them are destructive apart from to each other so they seem rather pointless now BUT they have been a great aid up until now!

Yeah I've done that with a few dogs, more because they sh*t and p*ss everywhere during the night than because they're destructive though.

i find the small breeds are the worse for peeing and sh*ting everywhere, even if the backdoors open
