Through the night

My new pup is great during the day going outside, howver she seems to keep all her poo inside until during the night, She never has one during the day and its always during the night. I have tried setting my alarm during the night to take her out but no luck she has already done it or waits till she has come back in and im alseep. I really dont want to put her in a creat though. The vet suggested taking all water and food off her at 6pm however thats still isnt working she still does it in the bed room. any ideas what I can try?

Re: Through the night

I wouldn't take all water and food off her, regardless of what the vet says. Dogs should have access to water 24/7. Imagine if you woke up in the night with a dry mouth and couldn't get a drink? Aside from that, if the pup is clean/dry, then it will be because they didn't need to go, not because they learnt not to.

I am not sure how old she is, but it may just be 'one of those puppy things', and she'll grow out of it, or it may be that the breeder was old fashioned and tol dher off for pooing, or rubber her nose in it, so she is trying to hold it for when you are not there so she doesn't get told off.

You could train her to go in a crate at night. This will lessen the likelyhood of her going at night, as she will be reluctant to go in her bed, especially if you feed her in her crate aswell, and leave a small bowl of water in there, as dogs don't like to toilet near their food as well as their beds.

Just make sure if she does poo in the hosue when you're there, you simply move her outside, and don't tell her off, as if you do tell her off, all that will happen is she will learn it isn't 'safe' to poo in the house when you're there, not just that it isn't Ok to poo in the house.

Re: Through the night

I try not to feed the pups after 5pm I also try to make sure before we go to bed I run around the garden with them and try and encourage them to do there Jobbies then..

I then put paper down near the door in case f any accidents.. I also don't think you can just put a puppy in a crate and expect them to hold it in all night.. I think you should introduce through the day.. And then increase the time puppy is in the crate. But always make sure when you let the puppy out they go straight into the garden and praise them for doing a jobbie outside..

I hope that helps..

I had 9 puppies and trying to get them to do Jobbies outside was a nightmare..lol I used to be running round the garden like a mad woman.. hehe..
Only 2 left now so so much easier..

Re: Through the night

I would also suggest a crate and start crate training your puppy. But of course first you need to make sure you do it right. I am sure someone will be along to advise.

I have/am crate training my 14 week old pup. She is doing very well... She now goes through the night without needing to go out. When in her crate at night at bed time, if she needs to do a poo or a wee she lets me know. I take her out and say "weewee" she can now do it on command! which is good.

Like Jackson said, pups don't like to soil their food/bed area, so if in a crate this helps. Of course, if a puppy has been holding on and is at the point of no return then of course they will soil their crate. If you get up during the night to give the puppy enough opportunities to relieve itself, then that's ok.

I also think it just depends on the individual puppy, they are all different like us humans are.

You may just have to try and stick with it and hope that your puppy grows out of it (if you are trying everything possible to stop her pooping indoors at night).

When your puppy does succesfully do a poo outside make sure you reward and praise your puppy as much as possible as soon as she has done it. Also try using a command word while she's doing it. For a wee I say "wee wee" and she now goes, she's learnt that one...

If she does do a poo inside, take her to another room or out into the garden and clean it up without her seeing. This is what I was told to do.

Don't make a big deal out of it, just be quiet and clean it up. After all there is NO point telling a dog NO after the duty has been done. Behaviour needs to be corrected when the crime happens, not 15 mins later... or even hours later.

Good luck!
