Re: Any whippet owners out there?

My Jojo is my first ever whippet (his dads pure whippet and his mum is whippet with 1/4 bedlington). I have had a deerhound in the past so sighthounds weren't completely new to me.

I already had a jack russell when we got him and they get on famously though they have times of racing round the house and garden at top speed chasing each other and lots of noisy playfights. I was a bit concerned having 2 dogs with prey drive because I have a cat but Jojo was brought up with cats (one of Nat79s pups) and he's fine. In fact my JR was much worse with the cat chasing when she was a puppy. I can't trust either of them with any other cats though.

Anyway he's great. Such a character and provides lots of laughs and is very loving. Likes to perch his bony body on your lap for a cuddle (or should I say he just flops down) which can be quite painful

He is very mischievous. He takes stuff off the worktops, rips anything paper into shreds, has destuffed his bed, digs my plants up and brings them in the house, chewed my glasses and that is just a small sample.

He is also very cheeky and knows he's gorgeous...

Here is a pic of some of his handywork!!

Re: Any whippet owners out there?

Hi you will love them. I have never owned one before 2 years ago. I have 3 large dogs which I brought and bred. The whippet came along as he was not good enough for showing for his last owners. He fitted in with the other 3 dogs no problem. Although he lived outside he now sleeps on the bed, in his bed, and with one of the deerhounds, anywhere it is comfy. I am out at work all day and he sleeps after they have had their run on the beach. I have somebody to come in and let them out at lunchtime but they would still be okay. Scruples is a new whippet rescue and I have just been accecpted onto their foster list. I wish you luck with whatever you choose.

Re: Any whippet owners out there?

I know your other half would rather have 1, but I have gone from having one dog at a time all my life to now having two and I must say I would never have just 1 again!!
They love each other, amuse each other, keep each other company, its just so lovely.
If you could get an already bonded pair (I noticed there is on scruples)
that would just be fantastic.
Good luck whatever you do!

Re: Any whippet owners out there?

Thanks. Yep I would rather have 2 but he isnt sure. Im hoping at the time we will meet a pair at a rescue and he wont be able to resist! We might hang on a few years until I dont work full time anymore and get a pair then but we are still undecided!

Re: Any whippet owners out there?

Have just spoken to the southern lurcher rescue and they have said we cant have a dog from them because we work Seems every rescue would prefer us to be on benefits sitting at home all day with hardly any money than to work with a decent income and be able to afford vets bills etc! They said we would be considered for an old dog but being an active young couple I dont think an elderly dog would be able to keep up!

Never mind, mayb we would be better off with a goldfish

Re: Any whippet owners out there?

Try Scruples they may agree to you working they may ask if you can provide some one to call into the dogs during the day to let them out or walk them but as long as you agree then may say its ok.

Re: Any whippet owners out there?

Hi Rachel001, yes I'd still try Scruples as Freya suggests. You never know... they may say yes, especially if you can have someone take them out for a walk during the day.

I think it's pretty unrealistic to only rehome dogs to familes who are in all day. Most of the population do work and if they do, provisions can generally be made to make sure the dogs are still well cared for. I do agree in a way though that it is best for the dog to go to a home where someone is around most of the day, as they are pack animals. But many dogs do live very happily with owners who work and many thousands are mis-treated by people who are actually home all day. Just depends on the dog I think.

I was a bit worried when we first started looking that we would be turned down because we both work. My OH is a teacher though so is at home during the holidays. Just keep looking, you'll find one!
