Re: Yorkie

Have they had the relevent health tests done?

A male going off his food is pretty normal when there is a bitch in season, mine does everytime.

Yes I would keep them seperate otherwise you won't know what day she was actually mated on and also to prevent any injuries occuring to the dog and bitch if you are not around. Do you have the help of the person who bred your dogs? Or even someone with experience of breeding?

Re: Yorkie

You can either have her blood tested which will tell you when she is ovulating, but this sometimes has to be done a few times. Or you can introduce your male and go by his reactions roughly around day 10 onwards, though some males will mate a bitch whether she is ready or not. I think your best option would be the blood tests. Speak to your vet about this soon so he is prepared for it.
A good book to buy is "The Book of The bitch" by J.M Evans & Kay White, you can get it on Amazon.

Re: Yorkie

I think the test your going on about basi is the pre mate test?
i took my female to have the pre mate test and i must say it is very good, it did take a couple of trips to the vets, first cost was something like £28 and then gets a few quid cheaper each test you take, But it is very worth it so you can catch her ovalating, The result was 9 bouncy babys for me
