It sounds like you lack confidence.. and with training you will be confident in your walking..

I personally really like springers. In fact I like most working dogs.. When I was looking for my dog one breeder I rang told me I wasn't suitable for a weimy because I live on an estate..LMAO.. Didn't give me the chance to explain my life..
And quite a lot of the dogs in breed sanctuaries have not had the training put into them..

hi Moment of madness now theirs a mouthful can I call you mad from now on and you call me trouble(the names Sue for real).

I was not particuarly getting at you I just considered the statment rather reckless, especially coming from a weim owner!!! do you know how many young weims the two breed resues currently have for rehoming?? It's scary!!! I feel it is far better to rehome a dog at such a young age, then waiting until the dog is out of control, the question was asked and I gave my honest opinion.

I think in the original post the lady did indicate that she was already feeling as though she was unable to commit anymore time, and the question raised was with to rehoming the dog now - at a young age - I feel imh that if you have to ask that question so early on, that your capabilities to cope in the future could be high risk., how will the lady cope when the kevins set in?
regards
sue

LOL I am known as MOM on other forums..
I see your point but she also stated she was getting help.. sometimes people can put that little bit of doubt in our minds of what we are capable of doing.. Having read the thread.. That is what I felt was happening.. I mean did the person think she was struggling before her husband Family/friends put there two pence in?

I am a great believer in if you don't try you will never know.. This dog may be great for this family.. And seen as the husband already had contact with them when he was younger you would think that he would have thought all this in the first place?
Anyway my thought is that they need to find a discipline they enjoy together..
LOL I would love to do that ball thing with my Maizie lol but I am afraid she would be chasing all the balls in the ring and not just her own teams...

Re: I have been asked to consider giving up our pup, springer spaniel

i have a three yr old english springer spaniel and i love him to bits. but to be honest they are hard work you really need to learn as much as you can about this breed. they are always like puppies they never grow up and they dont really mature til they are at least two. Springers are the most loving loyal and fun dogs to be with great with people but they are first and foremost working dogs and they need lots of mental and physical excercise. I would always have springers in my life( I'm on my third now) but i have a healthy respect for this breed. If your inlaws are experienced handlers in this breed my advice would be to listen to them if they feel you dont have the time and experience they could be right. My springer doesn't hunt but he still needs at least three hours a day of play and excercise. Their energy is limitless. hope this has helped good luck

Re: I have been asked to consider giving up our pup, springer spaniel

Hi,

We have had three springers, all dogs. I lost one recently, he was a star & I miss him very much. Yes, they are live wires & have loads of energy! Sam, the one we lost was more of a handful than the other we had two years later. Although the same breed, very different creatures. They do need a lot of excercise but I guess all dogs do, unless they are a toy breed & then maybe not so much required? We love the breed sooo much we now have another pup, 15 weeks.

I don't have kids and so, cannot really comment on that, other than to say they have all been very good with my nieces, my nephew and my hubbies grandson and friends children.

I'm sure you will do what is right for you & your family.

Lou

Re: I have been asked to consider giving up our pup, springer spaniel

I personally have never had a springer, I have 2 border collies. However I am aware of their reputation for being very boisterous and energetic etc.....but this may make you a little moire positive. My Nan was given a 24 week old springer after her yorkshire terrier passed away. She was unsure at first as it was obvious it was going to be a big dog. However, the dog is the most gentle, obedient and loving dog I have ever seen and my Nan and him are soul mates. The dog is now 7 years old and my Nan incidently is 84 years young....she has never had any problems with energy but she does walk him for 3 miles everyday....I think even though dogs have specific tendancies due to breed, each dog is different....only give your dog up if your are sure as you may not forgive yourself later.

Hy

I just wanted to say that I feel it is a little mean of your hubby to have been talking to possible new owners of the dog, without you having made a decision. You obviously didnt get a springer as you simply fancied one, so you obviously thought about the breed and what would fit in with your family.

If you sit and seriously think about the whole situation, if the dog hadn't been away and those people hadn't said anything, youl would be happy as larry and not having so many of these thoughts.
