Re: I have been asked to consider giving up our pup, springer spaniel

I'm so glad you have decided to keep him and start training, I think that will be really good for him! It sounds like a really good club too.

Please keep us updated

Re: I have been asked to consider giving up our pup, springer spaniel

hi,
I've just read through all the post and i'm so glad you decide to keep the dog, like you say hes part of thr family now and shouldn't listen to what other people say as its your choice family tired telling me not to get a dog now we have 2 both very active large dogs and i would like a third in a couple of months. i also have a daughter and she loves the dogs to bits she plays with them both now they are out of the puppy stage, i think it also is good for children to grow up round dogs as alot of children can be scared of them.
Springer spaniels are lovely dogs and as people have said if you train him right you should have no problems at all with him you could get him doing flyball, or agilty.
I wish you all the luck and i'm sure you will have so many happy and rewarding times with him.

Re: I have been asked to consider giving up our pup, springer spaniel

Hi
I am sad for you but know exactly how you feel, but I also know what they mean.
I bought my Mum a springer without doing much research, she was a rare & beautiful animal, totally white apart from 2 liver ears, very expensive & a ball of wild love.

Sadly she was virtually untrainable,in every way,my Mum loved this little dog to bits & struggled for 3 years to train her,she even took her to a professional who actually said what your in laws have said, and it is true.

A springer doesnt start to mature until at least 5 years old,I have had german shephards all my life & expected her to be the same, not a chance.

She was like a whirling dervish 24/7..

When my Mum was told she was dying we took advice and gave her to the Police.
Now,she is wonderful, they need to be totally worked & focus all the time, she is now winning awards, she would have eaten them when we had her..

Hope this helps in some small way

God bless

Re: I have been asked to consider giving up our pup, springer spaniel

... some people say they need to be worked all the time and need so much exsersise and hate to just be lieing around the house and if they are left to do so they become destructive ...

This isnt the case with my Springer at all he just chews a bone or just lies around in the day and then when the wethear cools I play fetch with him in the garden for about half an hour , then later on we all go out on a walk , occasionally we take him for hikes ( in the winter ) and the beach and things and he can run for hours ! and he loves to 'trot' next to me when i go on a bike ride with him .. but like when we lived in an apartment ( for about 3 months ) he only got walked 30 mins in the evening ( the street dogs are a nightmare .. ) and got taken outside every now and then to go to the toilet and he was fine with it * I know it was not ideal but there was family issues money issues ect * .... I dunno maybe he is just different but he is a Show Type X Working Type - English Springer Spaniel .

I mean he was a little hard work during the puppy stages teething ect but I think thats puppys in general ( he is our first dog )

... anyways ....

Im happy you decided to keep him and good luck

Natalie x

What Twaddle.. If you do not have a problem with the dog then I wouldn't consider parting with him..

A dog will settle into your life.. and I am sure he will be happy with your family.. some people think they know everything.. How can someone else decide what or who is right for yourself..

Re: I have been asked to consider giving up our pup, springer spaniel

I've seen some Springers that haven't been trained and they are a complete nightmare, one even bit me, they need good training and a lot of stimulation, probably the reason people send them to us rather than kennels. They are a great breed in the right hands but they are a complete nightmare in the wrong hands. Unless you have the time and are prepared to put the effort in to train and stimulate your dog I would seriously consider re-homing. The happiest Springers I've come across are those that spend most their days out and about walking and regularly do something like gun dog training. Those that are poorly trained and are left alone at home for hours on end are the ones that end up biting someone and give the breed a bad name.

Yes what you say is utter twaddle! on that I do agree, 'some' dogs do not just 'settle into your lifestyle, If they did specific breed rescues and dog santuries would not be full of them.

MM Double trouble I am confused at your post...

If you do not try with an animal you will never know.. All animals need training to make there lives easier and less frustrating.. And you are trying.. I would probably join dog training.. There are all sorts of avenues to go down for training..

It sounds like you lack confidence.. and with training you will be confident in your walking..

I personally really like springers. In fact I like most working dogs.. When I was looking for my dog one breeder I rang told me I wasn't suitable for a weimy because I live on an estate..LMAO.. Didn't give me the chance to explain my life..
And quite a lot of the dogs in breed sanctuaries have not had the training put into them..
