Allergic to my dogs??

Hi

I have 2 Short Haired German Pointers who I love to bits - they are my babies. Myself and my partner have lived together with these dogs for just over 2 years now without a problem. This summer however, we have started to get what seems to be an allergic reaction when our bare skin touches the dog's coat - we have lots of cuddles in our house . We get itchy red patches with raised spots a bit like when you get nettle sting rashes, its not nice

Has anyone else found that they have suddenly become allergic to their dogs? We makesure their 'flea prevention' regime is kept up to date so its not fleas / lice and they are bathed regularly. I'm not sure what's triggered this reaction off? Any info anyone?

i'm not really sure but could i be something they've rolled in or their shampoo or even their flea treatment that's caused the reaction on your skin?

Re: Allergic to my dogs??

I would not think it was allergic reaction, as unusual for 2 people to be allergic to same thing

Re: Allergic to my dogs??

It definitely sounds like you are having a reaction to something on their coats rather than them.

Have you changed flea treatment, shampoo, where you walk them? If walked in fields are there crops that may have had something sprayed on them?

I hope you find the answer soon. But I seriously find it highly unlikely that after 2 years you both all of a sudden are dog allergic.

Re: UPDATE .....Allergic to my dogs??

I had to take Daisy to the vets today so I mentioned the itchy skin thing to the vet.
He said that he saw this reaction when some people come into contact with short haired breeds such as boxers, staffy's etc. He said its the hair being rough and bristley that aggrivates the skin. The only thing I can think is that Daisy has got her first summer coat this year (she is 9 months old today! ) and the texture has changed from being smooth to being a bit more bristley???

Well we can put up with the itchy skin syndrome cos we both love the dogs to bits so its no big deal really!

Thank you for all of your advice
