No I suppose they do not have to be KC to come from good stock But how do people really know if they do come from good Stock. There are a lot of Con KC Breeders out there in the Big Bad World and more Con Non KC Breeders.
Its really down to believing someone's word re Pedigree papers and health tests if Non KC.

Kennel Club Registration

25-Jul-06

The Kennel Club is dedicated to canine wellbeing and registers over 200,000 pedigree dogs every year. This knowledge helps to maintain the integrity and health of pedigree breeds. There are 209 breeds of dog eligible for Kennel Club registration, which are categorised in seven groups: hounds, gundogs, terriers, utility, working, pastoral and toys. Crossbreeds are also eligible for registration in their own right under the Activity Register and with the Companion Dog Club.

Breed Register

The Kennel Club deals with all matters relating to the registration of puppies, and is able to offer many services through its computer system, which contains registration details of every dog registered since 1982.

To be eligible for entry onto the breed register, both the sire and dam must also be eligible for entry onto this register, and be of the same breed.

Pedigrees

When you collect your Kennel Club Registered puppy, the breeder may also supply a Kennel Club pedigree certificate. If not, you can order a range of pedigrees directly from the Kennel Club - it is a unique record detailing your dog's family tree.

Activity Register

Any dog of any ancestry may be registered in the Activity Register. Any dog on this register may then compete in Obedience, Working Trials, Agility, Heelwork to Music and Flyball competitions licensed by the Kennel Club. It is not eligible to compete in Field Trials or Gundog Working Tests.

By registering your dog with the Kennel Club you will have access to a number of benefits and services, including our flagship publication, the Kennel Gazette, advice and support on dog health, welfare and training and access to a range of different events and activities licensed by the Kennel Club for you and your dog to enjoy. Please note that if your dog is already registered on the Kennel Club Breed Register, it is not necessary to also apply for registration on the Activity Register, as it is already eligible to compete in all these activities. If both parents of your dog are on the Breed Register you should apply to have your dog added to the Breed Register. For further information please contact 0870 606 6750.

Any dog that is a member of the Companion Dog Club is automatically entered onto this register. The Companion Dog Club is a great way to become part of the dog world and celebrating with others the company of dogs company with others.

Established by the Kennel Club in 2001, the Club is open to both crossbreed and pedigree dogs and members find it is a great way to celebrate the fun and friendship they share with their doggy pals.

When you join the Companion Dog Club you will receive a membership pack with a range of goodies for you and your dog. A newsletter will also be sent to you twice a year, packed with news, competitions, special offers, a gallery of all your canine pals and much more. The Club costs £12 to join.

As well as this there are opportunities for members to participate in special Companion Dog Club classes at Companion Dog Shows taking place around the country.

Blackberrylady is on a distinguished road
Re: Why did you buy a Non KC dog

I had always had KC registered GSDs until I got my last one 16 years ago.
She was from GS rescue & although she had both Mum & Dad details the breeder had just dumped the Mum on finding out she may have mated with a Non pedigree dog on a walk.

What a fool she was, when the pups wre born they were so obviously of good stock, and the most wonderful intelligent dogs to boot.

My girl lived 16 years until just 10 weeks ago..

When it came to looking for another GSD we have now gotten a white one,I loved her on sight, and selected her because she wasnt to be registered at the KC,why?,well I frankly think it is all a bit of a farce,if your are buying to show all well & good, but why do you need a piece of paper to say how wonderful your dog is,my most precious friend was not KC endorsed!! but she was the best.

If I had stuck to my rule about only buying KC dogs 16 years ago i would have missed out on the most wonderful animal,a real poster girl for what the GSD is all about & stands for.
