Do you have pet insurance?

Does everyone have pet insurance or do you have other plans in place for paying for vets fees etc?

Both ours are insured but my boy is a complete money pit when it comes to vets fees. Everytime he goes to the vet its for something completely different and always just under or a couple of quid over the excess so no point in claiming He's so clumsy and allergic to everything but we wouldn't swap him for the world.

Re: Do you have pet insurance?

Hi, we dont have pet insurance but we do have a savings account for the two of them which is never touched only for vet fees , which includes our cats too, i have an amount taken every week direct debit its about the same as we would pay insurers.

Re: Do you have pet insurance?

Definatly, before we got the monsters kev had a cat called charlie and when i moved in within a week I took him to the vets he looked awful, it turned out he had a over active thyroid so got all that sorted then he got the cat equvilent of lupis on his front paw and for months the vets didn't know what it was he was there every week for more pills and bandages etc by the time it was diagnosed properly we had a £400 vet bill and it was on 2 paws by the time he died 2 months later it had gone up to £700 and all 4 paws were bandaged the same weekend Charlie died my baby girl went into kidney failure they tried to help her but she died anyway and we left the vets on the sunday evening with a £900 vets bill and no cats!
I swore after that we would always insure any pets even if we never ever claimed it wasn't a risk i was going to take again.

No - we have a savings account for the animals and a credit card - the money spent on insurance with my lot would cost me a fortune but thankfully I have a great vet so its not really a worry.

Re: Do you have pet insurance?

All ours are insured, and with seven animals it does add up. I did think about putting the money into a savings account instead, but there are things that pet insurance pays for other than vets fees - public liability insurance, for one. No matter how well you look after and care for your dogs accidents happen, and given today's increasingly litigious society, I would not be able to save enough to pay out if I were to be sued. For example, on the thread about the trouble we are having with the yobs, I explained how during the night they had taken off one of our fence panels (it was behind the shed and so we wouldn't have been able to see it from the back door). If we had let the dogs into the garden and they had run out into the road and caused an accident, we would have been liable.

It's a pain paying out the insurance, but it does buy peace of mind on more than one front.

Re: Do you have pet insurance?

We don't have any insurance, did think about it but when Max got ill and had to have treatment etc but we worked out it actually cost us less than having the insurance, and we didn't have the added stress ontop of Max dying of having to claim for his treatments.
I've done a lot of careful consideration before choosing whether to get insurance or not. I guess you never know though.

Re: Do you have pet insurance?

Yep all mine are insured but we did think about stopping the older dogs insurance, glad we didn't as we've had a bill nearly £3000 since March this year, we've had to pay half of it but we wouldn't have been able to pay it all.

That is one thing that really annoys me about pet insurance.... as soon as your dog reaches an age where it is more likely to require treatment you get screwed
