Books on breeding

What books would you recommend to people interested in breeding?

I think we've all said 'Book of the bitch' at some point, but which others have you found useful?

Re: Books on breeding

Breeding a Litter by same author as BOTB

Born to win, Breed to Succeed by Patricia Craige Trotter, American, Norwegian Elkhound breeder, Some fantastic advice about finding the "pick of litter". Can be a little bit American in some places, but can easily be adapted to English type set ups.

The Joy of breeding your own Show Dog: Anne Seranne, Also American but excellent genetics based book, finding the suitable stud etc.

Re: Books on breeding

Actually there is a book called Breeding Dogs for dummies, now I know its not the greatest title, but it really does have a LOT of information in there. of couse as mentioned the book of the bitch, got a few others somewhere in this house, will dig them out and post the titles later on. but to be honest most of the most more important stuff I learned from my mentors who have hands on experience, and were always just at the end of a phoneline.

Re: Books on breeding

I had BOTB but gave it to someone who bought a bitch puppy from me as she'd not had a bitch before. I found the best help and advice was given in this forum tbh

Re: Books on breeding

never owned BOTB but do own some great breed related books that tell you all you need to know about breeding.

The best book i own is THE COLLIE.. A VETERINARY REFERENCE FOR THE PROFESSIONAL BREEDER.......... WRITTEN BY SHARON VANDERLIP. USA. A RARE FIND ON EBAY AND MUCH SOUGHT AFTER.

Re: Books on breeding

I love reading, I agree that the best advice comes from those with experience, but I might still invest in a few more light reads I've just popped a couple that Tanya mentioned in my amazon basket, maybe OH will accidently add them to his next order - like last time.

I will second this A MILLION times. It is very "American", but it is all transferable information. I bought this book when I had my male dobermann (he was 6 months and I was considering breeding from him). This book made me step back and seriously reconsider.

The Book of the Bitch is a must have, but aside from that one:

Breeding a Litter: Complete Book of Prenatal and Postnatal Care by Beth J Finder

Breeding A Litter: A Complete Guide to Mating, Whelping and Puppy Rearing by J.M. Evans, Caroline Ackroyd-Gibson

The Complete Book of Dog Breeding by Dan Rice

Puppy Intensive Care: A Breeder's Guide to Care of Newborn Puppies by Myra Savant Harris

there are others, but I liked these best.

Re: Books on breeding

Thank you all so much
for taking the time and making the effort to reply to my query. I think you have given me a great list and with that it should keep me busy reading for some time.
Just waiting now for the results of Saffy's Xrays.
