Sounds like a hernia to me. How big are they? Any pictures?

Yes sounds like umbilical hernias! 1 of my pups had one in my last litter, cost about £50 to get corrected, can be caused by mum being to rough when cleaning babies after birth and chewing the cord. Some say its herediatory but i dont believe it as only had 1 in my whole breeding time all the same bloodlines

Yeah the pic is a umbilical hernia, ask your vet they sort them without anesthetic, not sure what they do but i think they push them back in and stitch xx

Re: air/fluid filled lumps on 4 week old puppies bellies

They start off soft and airy then firm up with age, if the muscle heals and traps the fatty tissue on the outside. Keep pushing back in at any given opportunity and it will keep it soft so that you can push it in as its healing.

One of my pups had a hernia. But he was born by c section, so there must be some genetic cause surely?

People used to think it was to do with the mum being too rough, and some breeders still say that this is the case -usually ones who are trying to deny any fault with their lines! Since modern day science has proven this not to be the case and as many people who have caesareans or cut the cord themselves still have pups with hernias, it is obviously more than rough handling.

It can be resolved easily by a vet - most prefer to wait until spaying, and will perform the ops at the same time.
