pet price and show price

Should there really be that much of a difference? I've been enquiring around breeders as I am planning on getting a chinese crested to show.
I came across a really really dodgy one, who's pictures were the same as another dodgy breeder, and so were the prices, when enquiring after their price range I was astonished, she wanted 1000 for a pup to be KC reg with NO (yes that's right) NO endorsements, but she only wanted 550 for the SAME pup unregistered?? She then went on to try and justify this by saying that it's normal for breeders to have pet prices AND show prices . . I get that I really do BUT why so much difference? it only costs £15 to register a pup!!!

Needless to say I am steering well clear of that breeder!!! Fancy not protecting your pups (if they are indeed hers) with endorsements! They dont sell with puppy cotracts either!!

Was I right to be Wary??

Re: pet price and show price

Yeah most definately. We have two show dogs and they were pretty expensive because of their lines, but all the puppies were the same price. They were all KC registered, all endorsed. Any pups of Barney cannot be KC registered unless Barney has health checks and achieves good hip scores, elbow scores and a clear heart test. We also cannot take Barney to a hot country or a country where dogs are classed as a delicacy. If we ever have to part with him he must go back to the breeder. Hudson's practically the same except he must also win at championship level shows before any pups of his can be KC registered, and must have a good hip score and a clear eye certificate. Well done, you done the right thing. Nicole xx

Re: pet price and show price

All puppies from a litter should be the same price with perhaps a small discount if one has an obvious breed fault.

Re: pet price and show price

That's what I thought, she then said her previous pups had been qualifying for crufts and thats why they're so expensive, yet when speaking to knowledgeable crestie people, they are a relatively new line and are only just appearing in the shows, some other crestie breeders who I have spoken to don't sell their pups out of their champion bitch for that amount!

Her pictures she sent me were also the same pictures a different breeder had sent me . . is there anyway I can report them?? I think they may be scammers in some way or another . . maybe even a puppy farm as the other breeder had advertisements for crestie-poos too

Re: pet price and show price

Are you speaking to people at shows? I found that is the best way to get to know what you want in your next show prospect. To be honest, anyone who charges like that, I would steer clear of.

Anything more than £50-£100 difference between male/female or show/pet out here doesn't make sense to me.

In the USA, the AKC registration works in a different way, Limited Registration does not allow a dog to show or compete in AKC events. So, my breeder in the USA charge $2100 for a limited registration and $2800 for a full registration. This is the higher side of the average price for a companion pet puppy in the breed.

Re: pet price and show price

I know what lines I like, and have been speaking to a few knowledgable crestie ppl I've got my eye on a particular line, but they're very seldom available and they don't ask for those extortionate prices either! Got my eye on a very handsome young man . . . still trying to persuade his breeder to part with him! LOL These "breeders" actually approached me coz they "heard i was looking for a pup" I use the term breeders loosly as they smell like a puppy mill to me! I can understand why imports cost so much, and for a good quality line you'd expect highish prices, but I refuse to part with my cash on seldom heard of lines who's aunt "qualified" for crufts!

Re: pet price and show price

its v difficult to predict show potential until a pup is 6-7 months old

Unless a breeder holds on to pups until this age or there is a glaring fault i feel all pups should go under one price

I adore Nakids I know someone that breeds some gorgeous dogs, but unfortunately my OH doesnt like them, so I am trying to persuade him that they are just fab dogs In the mean time I am getting a dobermann in the late Spring this year. And yes, I would say that I will have to pay more for a show girl than a pet. I am just happy that i have found a good breeder

I do totally agree with you, you have to expect to pay more for a show girl, BUT if ur forking out THAT amount (1000-1200) you expect for the pups mother (at least) to be a champion and proven in the show ring, you cannot risk spending that amount on the fact that an aunt and grandparent "qualified" for crufts, that does not justify the huge price-tag! Also you expect for a good quality show line to have endorsements put in place to protect their lines! After all if they're so special to warrent a humongous price tag, then they're special enough to protect! It just boggles my brain that ppl go around selling puppies at huge prices that are possibly substandard or even bad lines!
