Free Until Proven

Ok,Something not discussed very often are stud dogs,

So what do you think about owners offering their dogs services "free until Proven" does it encourage bitch owners to use him just because he's free and not because of his lines or qualities?

Re: Free Until Proven

I have heard of this before, Chance my shar-pei boy isnt proven and I was told to advertise him for free or £100! I would prefer someone coming to me for the use of Chance not the price.

Well if I owned the dog no one would get using him until I did anyway, so hopefully would be proven with progency to evaluate I would definately not use one free unless I knew the lines and suitability to any of my bitches. So I do not think advertising your Unproven Stud dog for Free would be benificial unless to line someone's pockets

Re: Free Until Proven

Don't advertise our stud dogs anyway, but if approached for them to be used I always give a reduced stud fee payable once we know the bitch is in whelp and the green form and all the paperwork is held back until payment is passed over.

Re: Free Until Proven

I have a dog that would be suitable for stud in the futer but would not offer him for free if he was not proven.
When i bred my bitch i paid a high stud fee but did not mind for a good dog with great lines ect.(he was proven)
Would not let him breed with a bitch that i thought was not suitable or been bred for the wrong reasons.

Re: Free Until Proven

How can you charge anything on an unproven stud dog?
You'd be paying for a service on a dog that doesn't know what to do, I think the only fair way around things would be stud fee on production of pups, or confirmation of the bitch being in whelp. I wouldn't pay anyone upfront on an unproven dog if I ever were to use one, which is highly unlikely.

yes nicci would not take payment until i new the bitch was having pups but then want stud fee payment they are not getting it free it takes 2 to tango and they might lie and say she has not caught when realy she as?

If I had an unproven dog (which I don't) I wouldn't expect payment until the production of live puppies or confirmation of pregnancy. Yes, people can lie that is the risk you take but I don't know of anyone who would pay for the services of an unproven stud. It's just not the done thing, imo. I know many other people that wouldn't expect to pay either until whelps were confirmed.
